There’s been a lot of talk around HAAi recently. The Australian DJ-producer, a Saturday resident of London’s Phonox club for over a year, has made a name for herself for her absorbing, slow-release style and eclectic selections. “I’m a big fan of long, winding, melon-twisting mixes,” she says. Having developed a discerning following across London for her well-versed extended sets, she’s now beginning to tour across Europe with increasing frequency.

Despite growing up in a remote Australian mining town, music has always been HAAi’s life. Until a few years ago she was vocalist and guitarist in a shoegaze and psyche band, named Dark Bells, and spent many hours listening to weird Thai and Turkish funk, tripped-out psychedelic records, and Nigerian and Kenyan drums. Only more recently has she switched her attention to electronic music, throwing her own Coconut Beats party in Dalston, then a blog, a Rinse FM radio show followed by a Worldwide FM residency of the same name, and now also a regular series of events at Phonox and a record label. She describes electronic music as “a hobby that’s got out of hand.”

Ahead of her performance at this year’s Nuits Sonores 2018, where she’ll be performing alongside Daniel Avery, HAAi offered to compile a studio mix showing off some of her favorite records—a glimpse of the music she’s presenting in her sets. You can now download that mix below, with some information about the processes and tracks available too.

When and where was the mix recorded?

It was recorded in my old home at the RinseFM studios in Shoreditch.

What equipment did you record it on?

Was 2x CDJs and a Pioneer Mixer

Was there a particular idea or mood you were looking to convey?

This mix when I listened back actually reminded me of when I’ve played back to back with Daniel Avery. Perhaps it was in my subconscious.

How did you choose the records you included?

I kind of just went with my gut on this one, to be honest. It’s a mix of older and unreleased tunes as well as some of my own tunes.

What have you got planned for 2018?

Lots and lots of travel and shows! I have an E.P. coming out on my label Coconut Beats at the end of spring that I’m super excited about as well as a bunch of remixes for some of my favourite artists and have an LP in the cannon for later this year which is super weird and kind of cross-pollinates Coconut Beats with my days as a Shoegazer.
Just keep playing and making is the theme this year really.
