Today, Atomnation released the debut single from Santa Fe-based artist Maggie Thornton (a.k.a. Sky Civilian).

Thornton’s synth-heavy sonic style was birthed five years ago following a decade of orchestral French horn playing. At the time, Thornton was working as an assistant to a music theory teacher and spent her first paycheck on a pocket mono-synthesizer, which, along with a piano and Thornton’s voice, would be used to produce three tracks that laid the groundwork for her work to come. Four years later, Thornton began a year-long production run that would result in her debut EP as Sky Cilivian, titled Open Door.

In support of the release, Atomnation has offered up the first taste of the EP as one of today’s XLR8R download. Unfolding across a five-and-a-half minute run time, “If I Had” is a soaring slice of house that pairs soundtrack-like synth work with club-ready beats and nostalgic and affecting lyrics.
