It’s hard not to like Dam-Funk (a.k.a. Damon Riddick). The LA veteran is not only incredibly prolific, but his unique mix of West Coast G-funk, old-school electro, and vintage soul always sounds almost impossibly cool. Last weekend, he delivered one of the standout performances during the first go-round of Coachella’s 2013 festivities—check our review for more details on that—and it’s a safe bet that the man will be similarly charming when he hits the main stage again this Friday. With a new full-length reportedly in the works, we figured now might be a good time to check in with Riddick by having him put together a mix for the XLR8R podcast series. He was more than happy to oblige, and sent over a deliciously funky session that he’s titled The Healing. Clocking in at just over 70 minutes, The Healing finds Dam-Funk doing what he does best behind the decks—showcasing overlooked gems, most of which hail from the early-’80s heyday of electro-kissed funk and soul. He also made sure to note that The Healing was made using nothing but “original wax pressings” from his own collection. Furthermore, he clarified that, “no re-issues, mp3 files, nor CD’s were used in the creation of this mix.” Of course, we’d expect nothing less from Dam-Funk, as he’s proven himself to be an artist who recognizes that his craft is part of a larger lineage and history. Perhaps more importantly, he also appreciates a quality groove, something that’s readily on display here.
