Artem Xio has been one of the key players on Russia’s underground scene since the early 00’s, dipping his toes in various genres along the way. He started making music as a drum’n’bass producer in 2002.
His addiction for house music arose during the early 2010’s, thanks to an immersion in the study of the history of this music – Chicago house, Detroit techno and all related genres.
Artem was also music editor at Grooving.me for 5 years and was responsible for filling the air with various underground music – house, funk, jungle, hip-hop ect. In 2015, together with his wife Nastya Foxxylove and Andrew MB4, they opened the Wax Ninja vinyl store in Moscow, which was supplying both new and classical dance music to Moscow.
Under the Wax Ninja brand, they also launched a vinyl label, where in 2016 he released his debut vinyl record 3 AM EP.
In addition, since 2012, Artem alongside Nastya Foxxylove have been the driving force behind the SubUrbz community. This community aims to popularise underground dance music in Russia. In 2017, on the basis of this community, the vinyl sub label of the same name was created in which the Jam EP album was released, containing the work of local artists from different cities of Russia.
During this time, Artem played DJ sets in all the most significant house music clubs in Moscow including – NII, Powerhouse, Rodnya, Deficit, Propaganda and others. Off the back of his years of experience Artem is now one of the organisers of the Cruise party series, which is held in Moscow and is dedicated to all shades of underground music – from hip-hop and house to drum n’ bass and breakbeat hardcore.
The Wax Ninja Youtube channel is also an essential feature in Russia’s club community. Artem talks about the history of labels, interviews local artists (DJ’s, musicians, journalists, vinyl collectors) and try’s to cover all the facets of DJ culture as a whole.
