‘NOT YOUR SCENE’ is an attempt to reject the general expectations of the Cape Town mainstream electronic music industry.

We’ve seen the way ‘revered’ players in the scene have handled themselves and their business during this pandemic; the gruesome level of entitlement, lack of concern for the lives of others, lack of respect, the misogynistic tendencies etc., etc., the list of negativities goes on…

As a DJ I’ve made the mistake of trying to conform to the basic 4-to-the-floor, slower, minimal soundscape that shapes the scene here in order to try and get gigs and make a name for myself over the years. I’ve played for ‘exposure’, ‘mates-rates’ and all that bull. But after watching the ‘gatekeepers’ of this ‘scene’s’ behaviour over the course of this pandemic, I’m glad I don’t have to fake it anymore because it was whack being a part of this fake scene anyways.
