While the music of Matrixxman (a.k.a. Charles McCloud Duff) was initially known for its shape-shifting ways and the producer’s seeming comfort with a wide variety of musical styles, the San Francisco artist has spent the past year or so settling firmly into the worlds of house and techno. Starting with last year’s The XX Files EP, he’s been on something of a hot streak, and apparently, Ghostly imprint Spectral Sound has taken notice, as the label has signed up the fast-rising producer for an upcoming release. Scheduled to drop on June 9, the four-track Amulet, which was reportedly created using several pieces of vintage Roland gear, is said to find Matrixxman fluctuating between “bouncing house rhythms and hypnotic techno.” A stream of the EP’s lead cut, “Venetian Mask,” has been made available online.
