Red Bull Music Academy has launched a new video series, beat:repeat, through which the institution aims to chronicle the stories behind seminal songs from decades past. In its first episode, RBMA continues exploring the storied history of New York’s Paradise Garage and influential post-disco DJ Larry Levan, uncovering the making of The Peech Boys‘ 1981 production “Don’t Make Me Wait.” The first beat:repeat mini-doc focuses around Michael de Benedictus (pictured above), a keyboardist and collaborator of Levan’s who explains the role of the Linn Drum—and, in particular its handclap sample—in the making of “Don’t Make Me Wait,” a track which would go on to become the Paradise Garage’s first bonafide anthem.
