Following the birth of his first son, experimental German musician Hauschka found a “burst of creative energy” which led him to compose and record the entirety of his upcomingAbandoned City LP, with the exception of lead single “Elizabeth Bay”, in a mere 10 days. But before it drops via City Slang/Temporary Residence LTD. on March 17, the album is now available to stream in full.

Hauschka employs improvisational techniques in his music, allegedly “trusting the music to take him in the proper direction.” With a total of nine microphones in his arsenal, the artist used six to capture piano sounds via an analogue console which carefully preserved and directed them into his computer, while the other three fed the sounds through a mixer armed with delay, distortion, and echo effects. Hauschka’s conceptual exploration through ruined cityscapes is said to be a metaphor to depict the sense of “inner tension” he feels while composing. From one deserted city to the next, each aptly titled track is an individualized look at realms where civilization ceases to exist.
