After taking a year off, Moogfest—the Asheville, North Carolina-based festival hosted by the renowned synthmakers at Moog—is currently gearing up for its return in 2014. This, it turns out, also means the return of the festival’s DIY circuit bending competition, which this year offers Moogfest passes and a new analog synth to its three winning contestants. While the spectrum of circuit bending is a pretty wide open field, Moogfest has provided some guidelines for those who wish to participate: The device one chooses to bend must be battery operated (using no more than nine volts of power), the total cost of materials used must be less than $70, and a “bill of materials” must be provided along with build instructions and step-by-step photos sequencing the process of making the circuit-bent device. From those willing to meet the criteria and unafraid to get their hands dirty (and perhaps burnt by a soldering gun here and there), three winning devices will be chosen—with each receiving a pair of Moogfest passes, the grand-prize winner taking home a Moog Sub Phatty synth, and the second- and third-place contestants will be able to claim a new Slim Phatty and Minitaur, repsectively.
