With only six releases to its name, Parisian imprint Overcooked is a relatively new label with a surprisingly large stable comprising at least 20 producers boasting a myriad of sounds and locations. Finnish brothers Mitja and Petja Virikko, who together form the duo Jack the Hustler, are part of the roster, and made a splash with their debut EP, Run Up, a foray into bright-sounding house music that seemed more tropical than Nordic. Now, the brothers Virikko are back with a new digital single called “Joints & Steroids.” It’s an interesting departure from the style presented on their previous record; here, we have a minimalistic, straightforward house stomper that featyres heavy bass and the occasional altered vocal sample. The constant rhythm of the drums makes up the bulk of the stripped-down track, perhaps as an homage to the brothers’ years of experience behind drum kits prior to their entry into electronic music. And if that’s not enough Jack the Hustler action for you, you can catch a DJ set from the duo—as well as the rest of the Overcooked crew, Loefah, and Switch—during the label’s launch party at London’s Cable club on July 14 (more info here).
