Continuously in motion within the triangle of London-Berlin-Athens, BBC Radio 6 and Worldwide FM-supported Aphty Khéa weaves a fusion of voices and rhythms to form dark and raw electronica. The half-Greek half-British self-produced artist and activist’s latest offering, via her imprint Midnite Kanni, makes a bold and forceful political statement about state power, inspired by her native Greece.
Incorporating warped, audio samples of traditional tsifteteli (τσιφτετέλι) music together with spoken word samples recorded in anti- fascist protests across Greece, she creates a moving sonic vocabulary that is at once distinctive and hard hitting.
Currently based in Kreuzberg and influenced by the likes of M.I.A., Arca, COUCOU CHLOE and her dad’s old Greek CDs, she releases Alerta alongside a self-edited video, wherein the artist curates a visual archive depicting “the repressive actions of the Greek authorities over the last decade”. The video portrays moments of mourning, solidarity and resistance through footage that raises challenging questions on abuse of power.
The Bandcamp proceeds will be donated to the Legal Aid Team, a solidarity collective of pro-bono activist lawyers based in Athens, who take on the court cases of detained protesters and victims of police repression.
