Art of Algebra is the musical alias of David Hallinan, an Irish electronic producer who released his self-titled debut LP in late 2019. The Art of Algebra sound blends a mix of electronica sub-genres including trip-hop, downtempo, dark ambient and the LA ‘Beat Scene’. As a producer he uses analogue equipment, acoustic instrumentation, creative micro-sampling work and experimental sound design to create atmospheric compositions reminiscent of artists like Boards of Canada, John Hopkins, Rival Consoles and Four Tet.
Art of Algebra has spent much of 2020 creating new music in his home studio during lock-down. He has also been engaged in the development of music video projects which were released in the autumn of 2020.
The first of these is a video accompanying the track ‘Maasai’. The video features features Hinata Yamagishi, a ballerina from Tokyo, who performs in a mix of classical and contemporary ballet styles that closely mirror the off-kilter beat and dark atmospherics of the track itself.
The second video released in 2020 accompanied a collaboration with Irish-Nigerian MC Breezy iDeyGoke – ‘Praying on a Gamble’. The ‘Praying on a Gamble’ video explored Breezy’s experience of growing up as a black Muslim child in a predominantly white and Catholic 90s Ireland.
Following on from these recent video releases, Art of Algebra will release a new 4 track EP titled ‘Under A Different Light’ on November 27th. The first single from the EP – ‘Sci-Fi Saint’ – will be released on November 13th. As with Art of Algebra’s 11 track debut album, ‘Under a Different Light’ is characterised by a diverse mix of styles and genres blending trip-hop, downtempo, dark ambient and experimental electronica. The EP also marks a new sonic direction, with more emphasis on simplistic floating synthesizer textures coupled with a more acoustic and organic percussive sound. Videos to accompany two track from the EP will be released in December 2020 and January 2021.
