Blissed, rhythmic ambience that melts organic instrumental sounds into swirling, evocative ambient soundscapes. One for fans of the West Mineral and Exp Ltd. catalogs or Jon Hassel’s rubbery fourth world excursions.
At times sounding like PAN’s “mono no aware” compilation and at others sounding more like Arve Henriksen’s magickal new age improvisations, “Shell Collector” is a deliciously sensual, escapist treat. Cofaxx is New Yorker Joseph Magee, who put together the short album during the COVID-19 lockdown and accurately characterizes a feeling of heavy, internal unease crossed with decadent, dreamy reflection. These aren’t moody, dark musings on life’s imminent halt, they’re optimistic, hazy and good-natured, with subtle new age elements tempered by soft-focus beats and the faintest hint of rolling techno. It’s a bit like a cross between Timedance’s bass-heavy Bristol club minimalism and Special Guest DJ’s post-ambient body music. Can’t argue with that.
