Manchester-based songwriter and vocalist ZULA (aka Freak Slug) presents her new EP, titled “SKIN44”, due for release on Berlin-based independent label Havêa Records on Friday, 19th November.
Following up on their recent singles, “Elevate Me”, and “Let’s Go Out”, the 6-track EP features an eclectic mix electronic rnb doused in ZULA’s sultry vocal tones and driven by collaborator glue70’s off-kilter synths and percussive grooves.
Forged in the small hours following late nights, the quiet time of cocooned downtime and amongst the lived hours soaking up inspiration from her home city of Manchester, this is a project born of experimental experiences. Speaking on the focus single, “Cleo Patra”, ZULA explains: “‘Cleo Patra’ is a referential play on Egyptian history, where female energy in its purest form was highly regarded and worshipped in society. It is an industrial, moving love song, for those wishing to be adored by their admirer.”
ZULA has received support from Complex, XLR8R, Rinse FM, Reprezent Radio, BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and 6 Music. Most notably with ‘Cute’ being played by Arlo Parks on Annie Mac’s Power Down show, adding “I’m absolutely in love with the beat”. The new EP features the duo’s catchiest and most refined works to date, including the recently released “Cute” and “Neighbours” featuring rapper and long-time collaborator KinKai.
Tracklist:
1. Cleo Patra
2. Elevate Me
