Sebastián Maria is a NY based Colombian-American sound artist known for his original music compositions and DJ sets of experimental Latinx music.
Maria’s work draws upon diverse influences including música urbana, reggaeton, cumbia, musique concrète, chance operations, field recordings, house, and hardcore. His 2019 record LUNITAS was listed as one of the “Best albums of 2019” (tinymixtapes.com). Maria celebrates and signals a debt to diasporic memory while remaining individual in calculation,” and “[pulls dexterously] from the trappings and tokens of bit-crushed harsh noise, sound art, glitch, and field recording while remaining firmly aware of the cultural residues to which they are so dedicated.” (S. David, Igloo Magazine).
Maria is also the co-founder of the New York-based experimental Latinx collective Sazón Department consisting of Magnolia Polaris and Probablyourdaddy. Sazón Dept produces events and collaborations highlighting the diaspora of Latin American music and culture from its roots in Africa, through the Caribbean, to its hybrid forms in NYC. Sazón Dept has performed at MoMa PS1 Warm Up 2020 and holds a monthly show on The Lot Radio. – James O’Callaghan
