For such a laidback character, Swedish musician Sebastian Mullaert has a knack for making people dance wildly. His story won’t sound too far out of the ordinary to many of us: after a childhood spent playing the violin and organ, his musical world was shaken upside down after catching techno sounds for the first time in the ‘90s. Since then, it’s been an unrelenting commitment for Mullaert.
Alongside Marcus Henriksson, he launched into the scene as Minilogue (after working together as Son Kite for a while before)—a dual effort that led them to be picked up by imprints such as Cocoon, Mule Electronic, Wagon Repair, and Traum Schallplatten. After almost two decades together, they parted ways to pursue solo endeavors in 2014; however, Mullaert has also been known to work with the likes of Ulf Eriksson, Donato Dozzy, Aril Brikha, and Mathew Jonson.
He’s just as potent a creative force on his own, however, and his output touches on many different styles. Under his birthname, he has been pushing a dubby techno sound for the past few years, while with Wa Wu We, he makes deeper music yet—throbbing, hypnotic beats and ambient soundscapes. We caught up with Mullaert at a beach house in Malibu where he kindly guided us through a condensed version of his live set, while the waves lapped at the sand behind. Watch as he builds from sparse bleeps, through dusty keys, to driving techno, and back again—a master at work.
