Black Butter, the label behind a forthcoming EP from London’s Gorgon City (a.k.a. Foamo and RackNRuin), usually specializes in synthesizing traditional club music with leftfield turns—like, for instance, Rudimental mixing house with the sounds of New Jack Swing on “Spoons.” Gorgon City, on the other hand, sticks much closer to tradition. The duo has been making moves as a darkwave/house outfit in its native UK underground for just shy of a year, including an impressive spot on Diplo’s Radio 1 show and various mixes for Rinse FM. Featured here, “Athena” is the work of a confident group fully embracing righteous house music, while bolstering it with a new-wave edge and an absolutely brutal sub backfiring underneath the hood. Look for rest of Gorgon City’s Real EP when it drops on February 17 via Black Butter.
