J-Hilla (a.k.a. Justin Hill) crafted most of his debut EP, River Runs Red, as a reaction to the hyper-aggressive brostep currently saturating North America. The EP, which came out yesterday on Boston-based imprint Banana Peel, consists of four dubstep tunes, albeit ones favoring complex, tribal-influenced percussion and subdued, breathing subbass. “Fuse,” the record’s final track, takes cues from classic UK dubstep, employing a slow wobble and creepy spoken-word to create an exceptionally dark piece of music that may make bassheads nostalgic for the less-commercialized sounds of days past.
