Maryland producer Sam Ray (a.k.a. Ricky Eat Acid) has taken a novel approach to sampling for his debut LP Three Love Songs, out on January 21 via the Brooklyn-based Orchid Tapes imprint. Instead of drawing on other artists’ material, Ray culled recordings of his previous bands and side projects with friends as a starting point for new inspiration. “It will draw me over to it like it always does” simmers from a faint drone and piano refrain into a vocal-heavy, footwork-inspired collage, which sputters in erratic patterns around the recurring voices. Then the percussion recedes into the same austere piano line, disappearing just as quickly as it came.
