Red Bull Music Academy has provided no small number of gifted electronic artists over the past 14 years, giving us such luminaries as Nina Kraviz, Hudson Mohawke, and Om Unit, to name but a few. Pazes is a recent grad of the 2011 Madrid edition of RBMA, hailing from Brasilia and working here with another RBMA grad, Istanbul-based artist Biblo (whom we posted about a few weeks back), on this new offering, “Rogue States.” The tune is a sweet, melancholic trip to the shadowy outreaches of post-Dilla hip-hop, swirling in a humid yet comfortable climate of descending keys, compressed sub pulses, and a sumptuously treated feminine vocal line. It’s a rich and warm jam from two up-and-coming producers that really brings out the feel of Tri Angle Records and the more loving end of the LA beat scene.
