Portland’s Dropping Gems collective/label will issue the debut LP from Seattle’s DJAO next month. Described as “an auditory narrative… composed during times of personal growth and inner reflection,” the self-titled album will present 12 new productions from DJAO, who is a core member of the Dropping Gems crew, having appeared on all four of label’s Gem Drops compilations and issued a digital EP via the label in 2011. DJAO’s debut full-length is said to find the Seattle talent continuing to craft hazy electronic constructions featuring “a wide range of sounds, letting electric piano, synthesizers, and deep bass tones handle most of the melodic duty,” while also incorporating the artist’s own vocals into many of the tracks.
Serving as our first taste of DJAO is “Depressing Jog Ends Well,” a jazz-flecked cut which places choppy piano chords and sparse melodies over an uneasy shuffle. A stream of the track and the full details of the Northwest artist’s upcoming debut LP can be found below before the record drops (in digital and cassette form) on October 28.
