Stream a Track from the Forthcoming Beacon LP on Ghostly International
Beacon’s sophomore album, ‘Escapements,’ is scheduled for release on February 6.
Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett, who make up the New York-based duo Beacon, have been taking a wholehearted and traditional approach to both their production and their live shows. Having toured the U.S. five separate times since the release of their debut album, The Ways We Separate, Mullarney and Gossett show no lack of dedication and their tireless efforts have paid off in what will be their sophomore album, Escapements. The LP is scheduled for release on February 6 via Ghostly International.
The unique, swooning sound of Beacon’s Escapements, which was crafted over a period of nine months, makes it clear that Gossett and Mullarney poured a great deal of time into crafting this album. Subsequently, the theme of the album itself revolves around the concept of… time. The title of the LP, which is taken from clock mechanics, has to do with the transfer of energy at a constant pace, a concept Mullarney became attracted to because of “the entropy it implies.” Mullarney explains that “friction and changes in amplitude over time mean every escapement, no matter how well crafted, will lose its accuracy and effectively slow down time via its own decay.” This theme is explored with absorption and yielding throughout the album as the duo explores their new sonic possibilities, free of any and all limitations. Often constrained by their electronic production, the duo brought Tycho‘s drummer, Rory O’Connor, into the fold to help bestow a fresh, live element into Beacon’s new found sound.
