Fabled NYC record shop Dope Jams has sadly announced that it will be closing its doors for good before the end of this month. In a story that’s all too familiar to the state of brick-and-mortar music stores, a combination of uphill economics and dwindling demand for music in its physical forms have ultimately led to the closure. But in its closing address, owners Francis Englehardt and Paul Nickerson do admit, “We knew exactly what kind of a logistical and financial shitstorm we were getting into” when they opened the store seven years ago. They also point to the fact that their unabashedly opinionated newsletters may have lost them some friends along the road. To send off Dope Jams with a bang, the store will be hosting a final in-store party on January 26—seven years to the day that the NYC shop was opened.
