Making the rounds on XLR8R as an Artist to Watch, Japanese beatmaker, professional sound engineer, and 2011 Red Bull Music Academy graduate Yosi Horikawa is about to release his latest EP, Whispers from an Angel, via First Word, but has shared a stream of the music ahead of time. The record sports only three tracks, with leadoff single and title track “Whispers from An Angel” featuring a heavy roster of guests—including indie R&B fixture Jesse Boykins III and SoCal producer and NonProjects label boss Anenon, who also does a remix on the EP’s flip. There’s also the standout cut “Drips,” during which Horikawa shows off his skill for arrangement, balancing organic percussion with sheets of thrifty, displaced samples and white noise.
