Not that we’re all that surprised, but apparently Flying Lotus can do just about anything. Along with composing and producing genre-defying albums and running a top-notch record label, Steven Ellison can now add “music video director” to his growing list of achievements. The beat scene don crafted this cosmically psyched-out bit of footage for singer Bilal‘s “Levels” track—which just so happens to feature soul diva Erykah Badu and bassist Thundercat, and was produced by Shafiq Husayn—along with help from a team of cinematographers, make up artists, special-effects teams, and others. FlyLo’s piece is reminiscent of the video for a track from his Cosmogramma album, called “MmmHmm.” Ellison explains his idea, saying, “I thought it could be fun to continue the visual style and feel of [that] space opera. In the end you have this crazy video made of so much mixed media, geek dreams, and lots of love.” You can watch how that translates to lovely visual art in the video player above.
