Furthermore, those who register early for these programs will receive a 35% discount from the course’s usual rate. More information can be found over on Dubspot’s blog, here.

Soft Metals Plots European Tour, Shares New Remix from Silent Servant

LA-based synth-pop duo Soft Metals (a.k.a. Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall) is continuing to tour off the back of its sophomore albumLenses from last year, with a series of European dates (and one in Mexico City) set for the spring. The ’80s-indebted outfit has also announced a new remix LP which will see a vinyl release via Mecanica in March. Limited to 450 copies on white-and-black splatter vinyl, the eight-song Lenses Remixes will feature contributions from Tying Tiffany, Jesse Ruins, L-Sedition, and more. Los Angeles techno veteran Silent Servant crafted a grim edit of “Tell Me” for the remix album, transforming the original song’s synth-heavy bliss into a steely acid workout and hollowing out Hall’s vocals until they hang like ambient gauze. Lenses Remixes—out digitally on February 3 and on vinyl on March 3—can be preordered here. The full stream of Silent Servant’s remix, along with Soft Metals’ live schedule, can be found below.

JETS Cover “Midas Touch” with Jamie Lidell on Upcoming 12″; Listen to Machinedrum’s Version

JETS, the fast-growing collaboration between prolific electronic forces Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum (pictured above), will drop its next effort later this month in the form of a two-track 12″ featuring two cover versions of Midnight Star’s mid-’80s classic “Midas Touch.” With Warp’s resident soulman Jamie Lidell on vocals, JETS’ collaborative take on “Midas Touch” fills out the a-side, while Machinedrum’s own solo version of the tune will be featured on the flip. Before the 12″ sees an official release via Berlin’s Leisure System imprint on January 27, a stream of “Midas Touch (Machinedrum Version)” can be heard in full below.

Arca Releases ‘&&&&&’ on Vinyl

Last year, Brooklyn-based producer and UNO affiliate Arca released the standout &&&&&—a free mix of original material, continuing his line of disembodied, surreal hip-hop experiments—along with helming production for FKA twigsEP2 (featuring one of our favorite tracks of 2013) and contributing to Kanye West’s ubiquitous Yeezus LP. Now, the Venezuelan-born artist has announced a limited vinyl pressing of &&&&&, which is currently available for purchase. Limited to only 500 copies, the vinyl features the 26-minute mix on one side, with an etched design on the flip. Hippos In Tanks—the label responsible for &&&&&‘s digital release—has also confirmed that Arca will deliver a full-length record in 2014. In the meantime, the vinyl edition of &&&&& can be streamed below, and purchased here.

Download a New Mix from Local Action

London’s Local Action label had a busy 2013, further establishing itself as a dependable name for grime, garage, and other UK-centric, bass-informed styles. Looking ahead, the imprint debuted a trove of unreleased cuts today in its “2014 Mix,” showcasing imminent releases for the New Year. With previously unheard material from DJ Q, Slackk, Lil Jabba, and new grime-focused signings Finn and Inkke, the half-hour mix should be a huge treat for fans of the label. The full “Local Action 2014 Mix” can be streamed and downloaded below.

El Mahdy Jr. & XJ “R4 Dub”

Prior to the release of their collaborative Raï Dubs record for Boomarm Nation, Algeria-born producers El Mahdy Jr. (pictured above) and XJ have offered up the wonky “R4 Dub” tune. Deconstructing several classic examples of Algerian Raï music, the duo presents an aged archivalist sound in its new music, with haunted vocal samples and rough instrumentation filling out the bulk of the tracklist. On “R4 Dub,” polyrhythmic percussion fumbles around the offkilter downbeat, as hollow synthlines weave into the mix. El Mahdy Jr & XJ’s track feels a bit uneven at first, but slowly finds its footing with an expanding, reverb-soaked pad and a quasi-motorik drum pattern. The rest of Raï Dubs will be available tomorrow over on Bandcamp.

Download a Blistering New Mix from Manchester Techno Outfit AnD

XLR8R‘s more diligent readers may remember the absolutely unGoogleable AnD name from last Friday’s Press Play feature, in which we ran a full stream of the longstanding Manchester duo’s new Kundalini EP for Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe label. And though we admittedly haven’t been actively covering the outfit’s sizable discography of EPs and singles over the years, our attention was officially grabbed by the new release, as it pushes a gnarled and heavy style of techno that sounds entirely au courant. Thankfully, we now have a brand-new mix from producers Andrew Bowen and Dimitri Poumplidis that hit the internet just today. AnD’s Resident Advisor podcast is a dense, hard-hitting mix of vintage cuts and fresh material, spanning a massive selection of music from the likes of Vapauteen, Florian Kupfer, Shapednoise, Jeff Mills, Regis, Sleeparchive, Container, Robert Hood, Pete Swanson, and Keith Fullerton Whitman, among many others. The whole thing can be streamed and downloaded here, where the full tracklist and a Q&A with the Mancunian outfit are also available.

George FitzGerald Announces UK Tour

Fresh off his recent stint in North America, Berlin-based house DJ/producer George FitzGerald has scheduled a handful of appearances across the UK club circuit in the coming months. The dates span from the end of January through the beginning of March, and will find the still-rising artist sporadically hitting cities like Oxford, Bristol, Leeds, Dublin, Glasgow, and Southport, among others. George FitzGerald’s forthcoming tour is said to precede the release of his debut LP, which is scheduled to arrive sometime this year via Double Six. For now, the full list of upcoming tour dates can be found on the flier below.

Mouse on Mars Spezmodia

Back in the summer of 1994, Mouse on Mars joined what was then the freshest indie-rock/electronic-pop crossover hub of the day by releasing its debut LP, Vulvaland, via London’s Too Pure. At the time, the label was home to PJ Harvey, Stereolab, Moonshake, Seefeel, and a number of other acts working the margins and intersections of shoegaze, German space rock, and dance.

The Dusseldorf duo of Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma brought new perspectives to a burgeoning scene, which they helped shape into what became known, for better or worse, as IDM. Albums like Instrumentals (1997) and Glam (1998), released on the then-newly launched Cologne-based Sonig imprint, remain oddly beautiful and worthy of rediscovery, as both records combine ambient and modern classical soundscapes with judicious elements of glitch and noise. Competing for the same headspace as Autechre’s Chiastic Slide and Aphex Twin’s Come to Daddy, these records from Mouse on Mars matched up awfully well against the heavyweights.

However, following the cheeky Niun Niggung (1999) and the more serious Ideology (2001)—completing seven LPs and about a dozen EPs over seven years—came a long period of largely obscure, unremarkable releases.

It wasn’t until Modeselektor’s Berlin-based Monkeytown label picked up the pieces in 2012 that Mouse on Mars properly got back on the radar. And even with the profile boost, recent efforts like WOW and Parastrophics have had minimal impact on an increasingly cluttered and competitive electronic music scene.

Perhaps that’s why Spezmodia, the duo’s newest EP, seems an attempt to freshen up influences and add a few more that have apparently been kept in reserve all these years. In fact, longtime MOM fans might not recognize the group they thought they knew in these five bangin’ tracks.

“Bakerman is Breaking Bad” comes soaked in acid squelches, heart-pounding drum programing and a simple, fat bassline, all of which clock in around 150 bpm. The rave-inspired “Cream Theme” picks up where that leaves off, highlighted by a synth-led chord progression and saturated harmonies that continue, almost seamlessly, into the superior title track, which hints (ever so slightly) at a soul/jazz/funk/early-Detroit inspiration.

“Migmy” is a variation on classic drum & bass themes, with warped vocal samples that bend and break as they go for a rubbery ride atop a dark, low-end rumble. The heatseeking “I See Dizzy” closes the set with a desire to get all the dancers back on the floor, or better yet, get them all rushing in the direction of the speakers for maximum headbanging effect.

Does Spezmodia sound like the chillout-friendly Mouse on Mars from the 1990s? No, no it’s doesn’t. But is it good? Why, yes, in a wild, sweaty, apeshit sort of way. It’s not groundbreaking, historically significant sonic art, but it’s not a bad listen, either.

Lucien “Mecca”

“Mecca,” the title track off French artist Lucien‘s forthcoming EP for his own Ventura label, features a somewhat unconventional cross section of musical styles. Blending distinctly Middle Eastern elements within his rolling house number, the producer’s tune proves to be quite the unique undertaking, one that comes additionally bolstered by tasteful percussion. In its second half, “Mecca” dips into more galactic territory when Lucien introduces a sparkling arpeggio sequence that covers the low-swung club track with a heavenly blanket of sound.
