Etch Old School Methods EP

Newcomer Etch is the latest artist to be signed to the UK’s Keysound label, which has had a strong showing so far this year with the release of Wen’s XLR8R Pick’d Commotion EP, E.m.m.a.’s Blue Gardens LP, and the second volume of its Keysound Allstars compilation. The 21-year-old Brighton native’s Keysound debut, the Old School Methods EP, operates in the murky space between grime, dubstep, jungle, and UK funky. As the EP’s title suggests, Etch’s production involves a fair bit of looking back to the mid-’90s era of jungle and pirate radio, but at its best moments, Old School Methods offers an interesting recontextualization of these sounds, rather than simply recapitulating them.

Opening track “Hybrid” asserts a dub-heavy jungle flavor from the track’s beginning, with heavily reverbed chords that give way to scattered breakbeats, rave-echoing stabs, and pitched-up vocals. “Sounds” is a collaboration with Wen mentor J-One, and the track adopts a loose, stop-start 2-step beat. On the flipside, “Sphynx” delivers hardened tech-step beats, which are paired with an anthem-baiting vocal sample, while “Lost Methods” deploys a similarly vintage-sounding sample intoning, “This is what I’m talking about, old school methods,” which Etch accompanies with cavernous bass and liquid breakbeats. Old School Methods is an undeniably promising release from a young artist; Etch knows his way around a vocal sample, and the producer’s appeal to the dubbier strains of the hardcore continuum is especially welcome in a climate where the UK underground is currently dominated by increasingly generic-sounding house. Yet too often Etch’s evocation of a lost era of London sounds feels too obvious, and with the exception of stellar opener “Hybrid,” the EP tends to fall prey to mere nostalgia.

Listen to Kyle Hall’s New Remix of Nosaj Thing

LA beat specialist Nosaj Thing released his second LP, Home, at the very beginning of this year, and has followed it up with a 12″ of remixes from Kyle Hall (pictured above) and Gerry Read. That record quietly dropped this week via Innovative Leisure, but we’ve only just been handed a stream of the Detroit techno innovator’s version of Nosaj Thing’s Toro Y Moi-featuring single “Try.” Maybe unsurprisingly, this rework of the song is a pretty far cry from the original production, as Hall largely spends his time dismantling the atmospheric cut and transforming it into a soulfully swaggering dancefloor stepper with nimble snaps and flourescent synth tones. “Try (Kyle Hall Remix)” can be heard via the player below.

Video Premiere: Policy “Grove Street Freeze”

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<iframe src="//player.vimeo.com/video/70251005" width="530" height="298" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>".

After announcing that his next 12″ will soon arrive via the 100% Silk imprint, New York-based producer Policy has debuted the first video for his forthcoming Postscript EP. “Grove Street Freeze”—created by Francis Hsueh and featuring an adorable child actor named Kaela Glaser—chronicles a paper origami crane that comes alive and glides around a city stuck in suspended animation. With a slinky bassline weaving fashionably late through the synth-addled landscape, the track’s melodic refrains and easygoing production style make for an intricate, funky counterpoint to the visuals.

Listen to Prefuse 73’s and Teebs’ Debut EP as Sons of the Morning

Between Prefuse 73‘s recent XLR8R podcast, the launch of his own Yellow Year label, and news of the forthcoming collaborative EP with LA beatmaker Teebs, the anticipation for the pair’s debut as Sons of the Morning has been palapable for some time. Now, to add more fuel to the fire, an artsy, 11-minute video for Speak Soon Volume One has surfaced, along with a full stream of the seven-track record. The visual piece offers short clips of each song slated to arrive when the EP drops on October 1, each one accompanied by a fitting hodgepodge of dusty found footage. The interesting video can be watched below, but for those interested in hearing Speak Soon Volume One in its entirety before it officially drops, a complete stream of the record is now available over on Noisey.

Watch a Mini-Documentary About The Martinez Brothers

After following Russian techno queen Nina Kraviz and tagging along with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Resdient Advisor‘s behind-the-scenes mini-doc series, Between the Beats, catches up with Bronx-bred duo The Martinez Brothers in its lastest edition. Beginning with the brotherly duo of Chris and Steve Martinez in their hometown neighborhood, the 15-minute clip follows them on a number of DJ gigs from Chicago to MoMA PS1 in New York, ultimately winding up in their adopted home of Ibiza. Along the way, the Martinez brothers discuss their rise from playing percussion in local church bands to DJing around the globe, and their father talks about how he helped his two sons get their first break. The latest Between the Beats video can be watched in full below.

Watch a New Video from Jon Hopkins

Renowned London producer and Brian Eno collaborator Jon Hopkins has been having a breakthrough year with the release of his XLR8R Pick’d Immunity LP, and he continues on that streak today, sharing an eerie, naturalistic video for an alternate version of album cut “Breathe This Air.” Directed by Anthony Dickenson, the hyperdetailed visuals reveal two unrelated characters brought together by a lakeside forest—a middle-aged man who accidentally hits a deer with his truck, and a tearful woman who sheds her clothes for a cathartic swim. Hopkins’ clipped drum patterns and plaintive piano melodies pair with the drifting vocals of Purity Ring’s Megan James to heighten the video’s sense of finality.

Listen to a New Cut from Laurel Halo’s Upcoming LP for Hyperdub

After announcing last month that her sophomore LP for Hyperdub was on its way, Brooklyn producer Laurel Halo has now shared a stream of album track “Ainnome,” the first preview of the record to arrive so far. Serving as the forthcoming Chance of Rain LP’s second-to-last tack, “Ainnome” is a methodical piece of hardware-driven techno, one which matches an almost calming array of chorded pads with a handful of machine-made rhythms and, eventually, a percolating bassline. The tune comes closer in sound to Laurel Halo’s noteworthy Behind the Green Door EP from earlier this year, as opposed to her somehwat polarizing full-length debut, Quarantine. Nonetheless, the artist’s latest production finds her constantly evolving and continuing to push forward. Below, “Ainnome” can be streamed in full before the Chance of Rain LP drops on October 28.

Eagles For Hands “Blushed”

Brighton producer Eagles For Hands (a.k.a. Laurie James Ross) is returning soon with his second self-released EP, Lisbon. Standout cut “Blushed” hews vocal bits from a myriad of timbres atop beds of serene, gliding keyboard tones. With a wonky, hip-hop-indebted cadence to the narcotic production, Ross alludes to his favorite beat scenesters and technicolor synth enthusiasts on his maximalist tune. Until an official release date is announced, the entirety of Eagles for Hands’ Lisbon EP can be heard after the jump.

Listen to Machinedrum’s ‘Vapor City’ Album Now

Machinedrum (a.k.a. Travis Stewart) hasn’t exactly been resting on his laurels while everyone awaits the release of his brand-new Vapor City LP via Ninja Tune; music videos, XLR8R Pick’d singles, interviews, and world tour announcements have all been keeping him in the headlines. But in truth, those sights, sounds, and stories have more or less been leading up to the moment when we can all listen to Stewart’s latest full-length album, and that moment has officially arrived. Vapor City‘s 10 tracks still won’t actually be released until September 30, but a full stream of its music can now be heard here, courtesy of Pitchfork Advance.
