Applescal “El Diablo (Lanny May Remix)”*Atomnation*

Dutch imprint Atomnation is celebrating its tenth release by giving away a retrospective compilation of music from its discography thus far. Entitled—appropriately enough—10, the album includes a mix of brand-new and previously released material. Lanny May‘s remix of “El Diablo” by Atomnation boss Applescal is one of the never-before-heard cuts, a tune which the Berlin-based producer scales out to epic proportions. The track sits somewhere at the boundary between techno and experimental electronica, with swirling synths buoyed by crisp beats and slightly swung hi-hats. 10 will be available via Atomnation’s Bandcamp from June 17.

Ossie/PhOtOmachine/Palace The Love Below 002

An offshoot of the Berlin/London-based label somethinksounds, and an imprint devised as a home for limited-release edits, The Love Below opened for business earlier in the year with popular young Swiss remixer Cyril Hahn’s highly hyped house versions of Solange Knowles and Destiny’s Child. This sophomore release finds a diverse trio of artists being reworked by three up-and-coming London house producers.

Ossie, an artist who has previously released on Hyperdub, is someone with a keen and faithful ear for true house music, both in his flowing, limber production and his properly skilled DJ sets. His remix of “Shakara,” an early track by Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, nicely juxtaposes clipped, techy rhythms with tightly looped samples of guitar and vocals from the original. It’s a simple club track that doesn’t try anything flashy, but it succeeds in using the funk and sweat of the Nigerian dance sound for something a little different that should still sit well with modern dancefloors.

Second up is PhOtOmachine‘s languid, pulsing edit of Musiq, a contemporary Philadelphian soul singer. The squashed drums and gasps of melody are layered nicely, but Talib Johnson’s voice doesn’t sit well, and the whole track cries out for a more nuanced and dynamic progression. The result is a mixture of elements that feels like an unfinished product.

Remixing Tweet’s brilliant, swooning R&B classic “Oops (Oh My)” is not a task that should be taken lightly, especially after Hudson Mohawke’s bashy and unparalleled version from a few years back. Palace definitely doesn’t rise to the occasion here, as the vocals feel rushed and out of place atop the producer’s uninspired framework of 4×4 garage bounce and reversed strings. It’s a shame that, apart from Ossie’s effective contribution, the otherwise talented producers here aren’t showcasing the considered, well-executed production that they’ve previously proven capable of.

Cromie & Sage Caswell “Vines” b/w “Pyrex”

The world may not be so familiar with Cromie and Sage Caswell yet, but the pair of producers has managed to acquire some choice names to remix its debut EP. Peach, the label behind “Vines” b/w “Pyrex,” is a new venture of Rem Koolhaus, a former design director for XLR8R and the co-founder of New York City’s TURRBOTAX® party. The remixers include Detroit’s Kyle Hall, San Francisco’s Ghosts On Tape, and South Africa’s DJ Spoko, and each leaves his imprint on one of the originals, with varying results.

That is not to say that there is any outright poor material here, just that Cromie and Caswell certainly have a defined enough style to warrant their own EP. “Pyrex” cuts a syncopated bounce somewhere between tropical dance music and more UK-based genres, and its measuredly propulsive drum work, along with drapey pads, is enough to sustain it. The duo drops in a bit of acid near the end as a kind of final push; it’s an understandable inclusion, but possibly superfluous. “Vines” is similarly percussive, but is marked by an ecstatic, filtered-up vocal loop, which places it firmly in the hands-in-the-air, peak-time anthem category.

Ghosts on Tape seems like an ideal choice to remix “Pyrex,” seeing as he began his career in an analogous style. His housey take is perhaps less exciting than the original, though its subby undercurrent and rolling snares lend it plenty of functionality. DJ Spoko’s digital-only take on “Vines” strips that track of its exuberance as well, but in doing so takes it to a more ominous place. Its lean groove is predominantly driven by a wiggly synthline, as clips of the original whisper from behind moody atmospherics. Even more impressive is Kyle Hall’s take on “Vines.” It’s one of the producer’s smoother cuts, and recalls his work from a few years ago for labels like Hyperdub and Third Ear far more than it does his 2013 LP The Boat Party. Hall’s musicianship ensures his take is the most complete transformation here, as he injects a fizzy, fluid synthline into a floating, dynamic arrangement. Overall, “Vines” b/w “Pyrex” is a solid first showing for Peach, and one hopes Rem Koolhaus can continue to source talent on this level moving forward.

Grupo Socavon “Homenaje a Justino (Uproot Andy Remix)”*Que Bajo *

Uproot Andy has proven himself adept at refitting various global rythyms and styles into his dancefloor-aimed productions over the years, and with his newly launched Que Bajo imprint—an extension of the NYC party Andy runs alongisde Geko Jones—the longstanding producer appears likely to only further hone his craft. The new label’s first release, Worldwide Ting Vol. 1, has now officially arrived as a free downlod of five remixes by the label boss himself. Featured here, Uproot Andy’s take on “Homenaje a Justino” from Colombian outfit Grupo Socavon infuses the traditional tune with a fortified bounce and a host of extra synth flourishes—turning the once purely tropical music into an infectious slice of hybrid club sounds. The entire Worldwide Ting Vol. 1 can be download for free here.

Video: Jimmy Edgar “Hot Inside”

With his new Ultramajic imprint, Jimmy Edgar is—according to his press materials—”on a mission to manifest dance culture on a level deeper than any bass can drop,” using his just-released Hot Inside EP as the latest step in that direction. And the Berlin-via-Detroit producer continues with his strategy on the Brez-directed video for his record’s title track, which pairs 3D-rendered digital landscapes with the tune’s crisp, peak-time house. The clip achieves a certain spooky transcendence with its abundance of occult imagery, gleaming crystals, and cosmic whirlpools.

Shigeto Announces New LP for Ghostly, Shares First Single

Increasingly prolific Ann Arbor native Shigeto has announced he will drop a new LP called No Better Time Than Now via Ghostly this August, sharing a stream of the record’s engrossing first single in the process. While the full details of the upcoming album have yet to surface, Shigeto’s “Detroit Part 1” is an unmistakably jazz-flavored instrumental which shuffles along with live percussion and picks up a gorgeous melodic run of thumb-piano plucks during its second half. The upcoming No Better Time Than Now LP is set to drop on August 20, but before then, it appears Ghostly will release “Detroit Part 1″ as a standalone 12” on June 17. While we wait for more details, Shigeto’s latest track can be streamed in full below.
