Filterwolf “Nocturne (Bodycode a.k.a. Portable Remix)”

Here, Munich’s Filterwolf gets the remix treatment from Berlin’s Bodycode (a.k.a. Portable), and while the original contains some interesting convergences of deep house and more electro sounds, the rework overtakes it. Slowing down the tempo and emphasizing the lush synth stems and vocal samples of the original, Bodycode’s remix of “Nocturne” is what deep house should be, recalling slower Moodymann jams and even a bit of DJ Sprinkles. With the original up for free download on the Process Recordings site, though, listeners can make a decision for themselves, and even watch a sexy video while they’re at it.

Earlier today the folks at Yours truly unveiled a new video starring some of our favorite Spaniards (and current cover boys), Delorean. Shot last fall in Barcelona, the video features a short interview and also captures the band playing a version of the song “Grow.” Bonus: It also looks really pretty.

Podcast 134: Deadboy

Although he only has two singles to his name, in the swiftly moving world of UK bass music, Southeast London DJ/producer Deadboy is practically a veteran. After the appearance of his sublime U Cheated EP, the Numbers squad snatched him up and released the even bigger “If U Want Me,” which solidified his penchant for swinging garage beats and pitch-shifted vocal snippets. Those loves are readily apparent throughout this exclusive mix, as off-kilter percussion and diva-ish vocal drops populate nearly every track, whether it’s an unreleased white label on Well Rounded—a label Wooten helps run—or an old-school classic. Not many DJs in this scene are dipping into the Basic Channel catalog, so Deadboy clearly knows his stuff. We’re anxiously awaiting to hear more from this young producer—new song “Here 4 U” is sounding BIG—but this podcast should help tide us over in the meantime.

Funki Porcini “This Aint the Way to Live”

One of Ninja Tune’s original star producers, Funki Porcini (a.k.a. James Braddell), returns with his fifth album for the label, and with a first single like “This Aint the Way to Live,” there’s no doubt that Braddell has stuck to his downtempo/chillout roots. Here, sub-sonic bass, foreboding synth harmonies, and bits of squelch ride over dusty percussion that occasionally explodes in wet, synthetic fury. In some ways, “This Aint the Way to Live” is almost too dark for a club’s side room, but it is certainly perfect for rainy day walks or drives through a metropolis, its gray sonic pallette and plodding tones reflecting slick streets and soaked faces.

Natalie Storm & FootSteps “Play Di Ting (The Heatwave Refix)”

Natalie Storm, who we recently profiled and also voiced last year’s XLR8Rpodcast from The Heatwave, is the most scorching new diva in funky and dancehall, and here she warms up this vocal refix of FootSteps‘ “Worker.” The original stands alone as an incredibly syncopated bashment anthem, but The Heatwave‘s addition of Storm’s up-front voicings transforms the track into even more of a club burner. Richard Skelton Landings

On his second album under his own name, Richard Skelton creates a mournful music that is directly informed by the landscape, specifically the moorlands of Anglezarke (in Lancashire, UK), but which is also elegiac to his late wife, Louise. Though site-specific pieces (in the ruins of old farmhouses and so on) were later abandoned in favor of recordings inspired by the location, Landings is still partially derived from Anglezarke. Skelton collected small stones, bark, and other ephemera from the environment that he would later use as sound sources or plectra. Landings entered the public domain as an online diary (of the recording process), but very much remains the sound of private ritual, loaded with personal significances. It is a privilege to hear.

Listen to the New Jesse Rose EPs

A few weeks back, we previewed a pair of new EPs from house producer Jesse Rose. Since our last report, the release dates have been moved up a bit, as the Berlin resident and Made to Play label boss released the first half of Sleep Less earlier this week, with part two slated for release in early May. As an added treat to whet fans’ appetites, Rose has put up full versions of the EPs on SoundCloud. Listen to the new tracks below!

School of Seven Bells to Deliver ‘Disconnect’ in July

One of the few actual bands on the austere Ghostly label, School of Seven Bells has announced the follow up to its 2008 debut album, Alpinisms. The forthcoming record has been titled Disconnect From Desire, and was produced by band leader Benjamin Curtis along with Jack Joseph Puig. Curtis said of his NY-based band’s new album, “From the start, we knew we wanted to make a record that connected on more of a direct and personal level than we ever had before. It’s a complete account of our lives this past year, and it’s crazy how taking an honest look at yourself can tell you the most about the world around you.”

Two dates at The Mercury Lounge (June 9 and 10) precede the release of Disconnect From Desire on June 13 via Vagrant/Ghostly.

Bubblin’: Turbo Sonidero Futuristico

Who:Turbo Sonidero Futuristico
Where: San Jose, CA

What do you know about tumbia? That’s what Roman Zepeda playfully calls his take on cumbia, which he heard plenty of while growing up in both East San Jose and Puebla, Mexico. After the video for DJ Shadow’s “Midnight in a Perfect World” inspired him to shed his teen punk aspirations and buy turntables, he began making beats and messing with downtempo, hip-hop, IDM, and even baile funk before repeated trips to Bersa Discos’ monthly Tormenta Tropical parties prompted him to get his cumbia on. Last year’s debut EP, Turbo+Cumbia=Tumbia, is not to be missed, especially its flip of DJ Shadow’s “Organ Donor.”

Mary Anne Hobbs Curates “Volcano Refugee Party”

Like many artists and DJs from across the pond, DJ and tastemaker Mary Anne Hobbs got stuck in the US last week due to that pesky volcano eruption in Iceland. But instead of sulking, Hobbs is using her unexpected extra time in America as an opportunity to showcase some of LA’s best beat talents. She will be producing and broadcasting her next two radio shows from Los Angeles, with today’s edition titled “Volcano Refugee Party.” Featuring 20-minute back-to-back sets from Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Ras G, Tokimonsta, Teebs, and TAKE, the show will prove that no natural disaster can keep the UK’s “first lady of bass” down. Next week’s show will be titled the “City Of Angels Special,” and beatmakers like Matthew David, The Gaslamp Killer, Samiyam, Daddy Kev, and Nosaj Thing are expected to come through. Check out all the pertinent details regarding time zones and streaming capabilities on Hobbs’ BBC site.
