Josiah Wolf Jet Lag

Siblings hate being compared to one another, but it’s impossible to listen to Josiah Wolf‘s debut effort without thinking of Yoni Wolf, WHY?’s master wordsmith and Josiah’s brother/band mate. Perhaps if Josiah’s work stood apart from Yoni’s in any real, audible way, we could ignore the fact that the two are, in fact, related to one another. Josiah’s Jet Lag is exactly that: a tired, pale, and lackluster approach to songwriting that echoes his contributions to WHY?’s catalogue, but fails to distinguish itself on its own. Now and then, Wolf will offer thoughtful contemplations surrounded by muted chimes and generous xylophone twinkles, but if it’s a matter of Wolf’s work being particularly groundbreaking, then we’d urge him to think before taking the red-eye.

Tunng Wants Your Remix in its Contest

London’s purveyors of buoyant, electronic-tinged old-timey pop, Tunng, are set to release their fourth album April 6 via Thrill Jockey, entitled …And Then We Saw Land. Before said album hits digital and physical shelves, the eclectic six-piece wants you to join in on a little contest they’ve devised along with Drowned in Sound. Land‘s first single, “Hustle,” has been taken apart and made available to any and all who would like to remix its pieces, and enter their finished product for consideration by Tunng. Among other prizes available to the winner, the best remix will be included on the b-side of a forthcoming single. All contestants have until March 31 to submit their entries, and the full contest details are available here.

Brenmar “Kicked Beneath Too”

Even as his main project, noisy Brooklyn dance trio These Are Powers, is blowing up the scene, Brenmar is finding the time to fashion old-school ghetto house and garage into futuristic new-school jams. “Kicked Beneath Too” combines whooshing synths, sirens, acid tweaks, and a just-hype-enough beat to make one mighty fine club track. Is it just us, or is every hot new producer primarily inspired by the music from the Eric Nies era of MTV’s The Grind? (Not that we’re complaining.) Seriously though, if Brenmar keeps cranking out tunes like this one, maybe folks will start referring to These Are Powers as his other project.

Mexicans with Guns feat. Chico Mann “Me Gustó (Ghosts on Tape Remix)”

The LA-based Friends of Friends label has already made a splash in 2010 with releases from Shlohmo and Ernest Gonzales, but the FoF crew is not going to simply rest on its laurels. This April, they’ll be teaming up with fellow Angelenos Innovative Leisure to release a new EP from Mexican with Guns, Me Gustó. This bustling here.

Bomb the Bass Back to Light

Plenty of people have mentioned the supposed tropical influence on the new Bomb the Bass album. Granted, Tim Simenon worked with Brazilian Gui Boratto (and a host of other guests) on this follow-up to 2008’s Future Chaos, and the resulting album is light and breezy. But Simenon has had a wide-ranging career over the past couple decades (he produced Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance” and Seal’s “Crazy”), and what ties this album together isn’t any sense of Brazil, but rather a more cinematic feel, best exemplified on the spacey “X Ray Eyes” and the spare “Happy to Be Cold.” But the hands-down standout is closer “Milakia,” featuring Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore on synths.

Sinden Announces New Label

London’s jack-of-all-trades Sinden has announced the creation of a new label, dubbed Grizzly, with two releases already slated for April and May. Aiming to reflect his “all-embracing, twisted-up” style of club music and beat-making, the first release on the label will be a collaboration between Sinden himself and SBTRKT, with the sophomore slot taken by Brodinski. Keep checking back here at XLR8R as the label develops.

Pezzner’s Debut Out in June

House producer Pezzner has been working for more than 16 years, but June will mark the release of The Tracks are Alive, his debut long-runner on Freerange. The Seattle-based DJ-producer brings his eclectic style to the disc, throwing everything from Reich-influenced minimal techno to lush, loopy disco into the mix. Two singles are already in the works as well, with remixes by Lusine and Stimming. For more on Pezzner and his hometown, check out our XLR8R TV episode featuring him and Lusine.

The Tracks Are Alive comes out June 14 from Freerange.

Dave Nada “Riverside (Moombahton Edit)”

Here at XLR8R, new genre and sub-genre names cross our desks all the time, but rarely do the tunes have the heft to warrant major attention. But when it comes to moombahton, weight is something the music is definitely not lacking. Dave Nada coined the term after playing some pitched-down Dutch house for his bachata– and reggaeton-loving little cousins and their friends—check this FADER interview for the full story—and decided to start making some proper edits for his DJ arsenal. Check his thunderous “Riverside” edit, which slows down the Afrojack remix of the Sidney Samson tune and also mixes in a bit of Bay Area hyphy prodigies The Pack. The entire Moombahton EP is actually available for free download, and if these heaters are any indication, club DJs may no longer have to live and die at 130 bpm. Moombahton can rock the dancefloor at 108.
