Sonar Festival Announces Huge Line-Up

If you weren’t already thinking up a ton of reasons why you should ditch your day job and trek out to the pristine beaches and beautifully moderate climate of Spain, well, chances are you will be soon. The country’s premiere electronic music festival, Sónar, has just announced its full line-up for their upcoming events in Barcelona and A Coruña. The enormous list contains, among many other well-loved and massive artists, Air, Hot Chip, Broadcast, Flying Lotus, Zomby, Hudson Mohawke, Mary Anne Hobbes, Plastikman, LCD Soundsystem, Mike Slott, Delorean, Pete Tong, Fuck Buttons, and Machinedrum, and has a primary focus on the amazing artists coming from the British music scene. So that leads to just one question; to pay rent or not to pay rent? Sónar 2010 goes down June 17, 18, and 19.

Massive Attack to Tour US for First Time in Four Years

The last time UK trip-hop forefathers Massive Attack made it to the US, the tour followed on the heels of a contractually obliged compilation of greatest hits and unreleased materials put out in 2006. Now, with the release of Heligoland, their first studio album in seven years, Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall are making it back to North America in May for a brief stint of live performances. Every town they hit, excluding the Sasquatch Festival appearance in Washington, will host Massive Attack for two nights of potentially sold-out awesomeness. Tickets will be going on sale in March, and you can check out the forthcoming concert dates below.

The Brown Acid “Bastard Kids (Ikonika Remix)”

The wacky digi-punk sounds found on the original track “Bastard Kids,” by Belgian outfit The Brown Acid, are just about completely removed on this remix by Ikonika. Her incongruous version of the song turns up the dubstep and garage levels to the max with the sheen of glossed-over percussion, wavering synth tones, and a head-slamming beat that’ll move just about any room in her native UK. Once the sparkling melodies rise to the top of the whole jam, Ikonika will have won over anyone within earshot of the track.

Epstein’s Discography Gets Reissued; Download a Free Sampler

Roberto Carlos Lange (a.k.a. Epstein) certainly knows how to keep busy, as evidenced by a string of releases under his other alias, Helado Negro, and collaborations with Prefuse 73, amongst other things. Now, Asthmatic Kitty is reissuing the entirety of his back catalog under as Epstein. To whet fans’ appetites for the sounds of the back catalog, the label has also prepared a sampler of Epstein’s best cuts, which is available for download here. The reissues will all be available on February 28, and the new Epstein album, When Man Gets Full He Falls Asleep, comes out on March 10.

Free the Robots “Orion’s Belt Buckle”

LA’s Free the Robots has slowly been crafting one of the more unique sounds to come out of the West Coast beat scene, pairing futuristic basslines that could fit into a dubstep set with chunky, dusty beats that sound straight out of the mid-’80s. On “Orion’s Belt Buckle,” bass throbs in front of wet, slowed industrial percussion while spacey synth lines and arpeggiations round out the track’s melodic end. With his debut album, Ctrl Alt Delete, coming out March 30, this slice is exemplary of what this young beatmaker can do.

Buraka Som Sistema Fabriclive49

Portuguese electro-kuduro outfit Buraka Som Sistema has been busy. After releasing their Black Diamond album, the group embarked on extensive tours across Europe and the US, which included a jaw-dropping set at last year’s Coachella Festival. Their Fabric disc continues the band’s skyrocketing pace, packing in guest appearances from friends like Major Lazer, DJ Znobia, and Zomby, and channeling the energy of the group’s bombastic live sets. Tracks are jammed with explosive dubstep beats and frenetic progressive rhythms that were never fully realized on Black Diamond. Although there are a few duds, they are largely overshadowed by the band’s slick, consistently evolving version of kuduro, and the promise that this momentum will continue onto the group’s future releases.

Video Premiere: VOICEsVOICEs “Origins”

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=9504887&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="530" height="298">".

LA shoegazers VOICEsVOICEs‘ new Origins EP has been garnering accolades from all over the musical landscape, and with lush production by Prefuse 73, it’s easy to understand why. The first single from the record, put out by Manimal Vinyl, is “Origins,” and the track’s accompanying video illuminates the duo against the backdrop of last fall’s Southern California wildfires. Directed by Patrick Fraser, it is premiering exclusively on XLR8R.

Aloe Blacc “I Need a Dollar”

Yes, we know that this is the theme song to that goofy new show on HBO where the most witty and attractive “hipsters” on the planet hustle their way through the “mean streets” and “glamorous nightlife” of a fantasyland version of the Big Apple. Yes, we also know that the average shelf life of TV theme songs is about four days. But damn if this track from LA soul-slinger Aloe Blacc isn’t the finest slice of vintage-sounding, piano- and horn-powered funk we’ve heard in quite some time. We’re not usually big on nostalgia parties, but if you can’t enjoy a few laps in the “I Need a Dollar” pool, you’re officially dead inside.
