Underground Resistance’s Santiago Salazar Tells the Club Scene to Get Real

On his latest joint, Santiago Salazar, of the mighty Underground Resistance crew, slams the flashy, overpriced mess that is the contemporary US club scene, dramatically intoning about “bow-legged photographers” and outrageous club entry fees. But with the deep Detroit sound that S2 is known for in full effect on “Your Club Went Hollywood,” hope springs eternal, especially with a groove-ridden remix from Aaron-Carl.

Your Club Went Hollywood comes out March 9 on Aaron-Carl’s Wallshaker label.

Podcast 122: Jubilee

Until now, the 2010 XLR8R Podcast series has been filled by heavy hitters from overseas, but we haven’t lost sight of all the great DJs on our own side of the pond. Take Jubilee (a.k.a. Jess Gentile), who regularly whips dancefloors into a frenzy with her rambunctious combination of bass-heavy electro, upfront house, UK funky, and plenty of tropical flavor that can be traced back to her younger days as a Miami Bass-worshipping Florida raver. Jubilee currently sets up shop in Brooklyn, where she heads up the Nightshifters label with Jason Forrest and the monthly Flashing Lights party with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres. And if you’re in Brooklyn tonight, you can catch her headlining our monthly TURRBOTAX® party, where she’ll undoubtedly be serving up a mix just as sizzling as this one.

Owen Pallett “Keep the Dog Quiet (Simon Bookish Remix)”

With a new album out and a major tour starting soon, Owen Pallett (a.k.a. the Canadian pop composer formerly known as Final Fantasy) continues to gather fans, and this remix from the UK’s Simon Bookish is certain to please even the most cynical ears. “Keep the Dog Quiet” is sped up and given a more bouncy flair, complete with multi-layered orchestral stabs, deep bass, and cut-up samples of Pallett’s vocals. In the end, the piece recalls Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch singing over a particularly lush Wham City track, a unique combination if there ever was one.

Scuba Sub:stance

Hotflush Recordings founder and dubstep-techno crossover artist Scuba (a.k.a. Paul Rose) has been in rock-steady ascent since dropping the 2008 monster jam “Hard Boiled,” a track that helped build a bridge of sound from London to Berlin. This DJ mix shows off where he’s coming from, where he’s going, and who’s coming with him. At its best, Sub:stance shows off the talents of young British producers Joker, Pangaea, Ramadanman, Sigha, and breakout star Joy Orbison, whose cheeky “Hyph Mngo” and “The Shrew Would Have Cushioned the Blow” are set up beautifully here. Other highlights include Mount Kimbie’s wonky “Maybes (James Blake Remix)” and Scuba’s own minimal dub-club cruiser “Last Stand.”

Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof to Perform Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures

Late April’s Donaufestival in Krems, Austria, will see a fascinating collaboration between the depressive pop of Xiu Xiu and the manic rhythms of Deerhoof. The two groups will be combining forces to perform the entirety of Unknown Pleasures, the legendary Joy Division album (and dorm-room staple) which has given music fans some of the most iconic sounds of the past 30 years. While Xiu Xiu’s latest record, Dear God, I Hate Myself, was produced by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, it was actually fan suggestions that gave rise to the plausibility of covering such a vastly important album. As if such a one-time performance wasn’t enough reason to get tickets, Fuck Buttons, Panda Bear, Dan Deacon, and many others are also performing at the fest.

Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof will perform Unknown Pleasures on April 29. For more information on Donaufestival as well as early-bird ticket sales, visit the event site.

Download the New Mux Mool EP For Free

One of Ghostly‘s latest roster additions, Brooklyn beatsmith Mux Mool, just made his five-track Viking Funeral EP available for free download on the label’s website. The free EP follows the release of Mux Mool’s single, “Lady Linda,” which we recently featured in our downloads, and precedes producer Brian Lindgren’s debut full-length album, Skulltaste. Viking Funeral is a combination of tracks snatched off Lindgren’s hard drive, live versions of old tracks, beat-tape outtakes, and one song with MCs P.O.S. and Prof treating one of the knocking beats off of Skulltaste to a proper lyrical assault.

Skulltaste is out March 23 via Ghostly.

Trans Am to Drop New Album, Tour World

One of Thrill Jockey‘s longest standing bands, the DC-based synth-rock outfit Trans Am is set to add another chapter to their strange and storied career. Thing is prepped for release on April 20, and will be the ninth album the trio has released since their 1996 self-titled debut full-length for Thrill Jockey. In a recent interview about their upcoming release, Trans Am collectively said, “This album isn’t about music at all. It’s about being prepared mentally and physically. It’s about training eight hours a day for the past two years,” concluding their interview with, “Trans Am went through a lot to get here. We can’t worry about the music now. All we can do is bring lots of energy and do all the little things that put us in a good position to come out on top.” Sounds like they organized a boxing match rather than a new record, but Trans Am is usually known for strange approaches. You can check out the artwork and tracklisting for Thing below, along with the dates for their upcoming spring tour.

Kingdom “Mind Reader (L-Vis 1990 Remix)”

The debut single from Brooklyn’s Kingdom, out now on Fool’s Gold, features all the elements we’ve come to expect from his productions; R&B vocal work (provided here by Shyvonne), spacey electronics, warbling low-end, and big, bouncing dance beats. For his remix, L-Vis 1990 ups the track’s future-house vibes with a mass of tweaked vocals, extra percussion bits, and all sorts of interjecting synth lines. The full Mind Reader EP also features remixes from Todd Edwards and Bok Bok, along with Kingdom’s b-side, “You.”

Blockhead The Music Scene

On his years off from making beats for Aesop Rock and others, Blockhead has assembled a group of instrumental LPs that stands solidly on its own, despite the generally shoddy reputation of instrumental hip-hop full-lengths over the past decade. The Music Scene adds new knots to Blockhead’s sly, ironic take on boom-bap, incorporating shifting structures that spiral into changing tempos, half-remembered snippets of soul horns and gnarly old guitars, and occasional drifts into hazy, shimmering psychedelia. Sadly, this fog thickly enshrouds the back half of the disc as the tempos stagnate, rendering it inert and crying out for a shot of adrenaline: paging Dr. Aesop Rock?

Bonobo Prepares Release of New Album for Ninja Tune

Simon Green’s production moniker, the occasionally funky and consistently soulful Bonobo, is only a month or so away from having another full-length album under its belt. Coming March 23 on Ninja Tune, Black Sands will be the fourth album Green has produced under the Bonobo name, and is preceded by the single “The Keeper,” which features the sultry voice of Andreya Triana. The song’s release will feature remixes from Redeyes and Bonobo’s labelmates Grasscut. Check out the album art and tracklist for Black Sands, as well as the video for “The Keeper,” below.
