Mixpak Drops Vybz Kartel’s “Yuh Love”

A sweet slice of electro-pop-dancehall love from Dre Skull and Vybz Kartel on Mixpak Records. Dre Skull is known for his electro/Baltimore Club mix-ups, but he’s already done the island sound with Sizzla on Mixpak. Vybz, meanwhile, like most JA artists, is anxious to showcase his lover side, and it’s especially important for him now that he’s in the news for both his raunchy Ramping Shop single and his beef with Mavado. But on “Yuh Love,” the duo has achieved a lovely balance that will make yuh wine yuhself and grab your lover closer for a perfect summer night’s jam.

Pollyn “Gave It Up (Peter Visti remix)”

A guru in in the Balearic Disco department, Denmark’s Peter Visti gets his hands dirty with this single from the Pollyn tribe by sprucing it up with a fine mist of new wave veneer and pop sheen. Dark synth progressions and disco vibes clash with the neon pinks and blues and flashing lights from some seedy discotheque from the early ’80s. If the Italians Do It Better banner ever have a sequel planned for the After Dark comp, this track would fit nicely between Glass Candy and Chromatics.

L.A. Dope: The City’s Beatmakers

Sheffield, U.K.-based XLR8R contributor Shaun Bloodworth recently visited Los Angeles to document the scene’s many beatmakers with his camera. The project, a self-funded collaboration between Bloodworth and Art Director Stuart Hammersley of GiveUpArt, entitled L.A Dope, “is the first part of what is hoped to be a wider document of electronic artists,” says Bloodworth.

Deep Rooted “Closer (prod. Exile)”

The self-proclaimed “feel good” hip-hop collective, San Diego’s Deep Rooted, lives up to its personal mantra on the soulful “Closer.” The bouncy jam, immaculately produced by L.A.’s beat veteran Exile, comes just in time to get the remainder of your summertime cookouts started with its warm church organ samples and crisp hand claps.

Simian Mobile Disco Temporary Pleasure

On their sophomore effort, Simian Mobile Disco has elected to attempt the dreaded “Featuring…” album, ladling guest vocalists over their defiantly analog pop-techno. But after hippy-dippy opener “Cream Dream,” unrelenting, quirky bangers suck the collaborators into the vortex of a hot summer night’s rave—Yeasayer’s Chris Keating clowns the lonely nouveau riche on “Audacity of Huge,” Jamie Lidell gets menacingly sexy over the seasick synths of “Off the Map,” and even punk princess Beth Ditto plays a perfect house diva (“Cruel Intentions”), leaving space for the acidic instrumentals to monomaniacally bang away. The aching, mysterious “Pinball,” stashed right at the end, sends Temporary Pleasure out of the park.

Labels We Love!

The wonderful Modular Records graces the cover of this year’s Labels We Love special, an issue in which we feature all of our favorite young (and some old) labels as they make breaking news or hit their creative strides. Among that fabulous list are the likes of Type, DIRTY, Mothership, and tons more indie companies doing amazing things with the most limited of resources. We also head to all points near and far to check in with psych-tripsters Black Moth Super Rainbow, rapper-producer Trackademicks, beat strategist Ras G, dubstep visionary Untold, and grime MC Durrty Goodz. It’s a trip, so pack those bags!

IK Multimedia Launches GrooveMaker App

When it comes to the Hammer of the Gods, everybody wants to steal a little thunder. I’m talking about turning the iPhone/iPod Touch into a portable drum machine, a market originated by Intua’s BeatMaker and now entered by IK Multimedia with the debut of the GrooveMaker modules. A port of an existing product from the Italian audio software developer, GrooveMaker offers up eight stereo tracks and hundreds of loops for creatingly instant remixes. It’s a real-time, drag-and-drop composition tool offering a melodic and rhythmic library of drums, bass, bass drums, lines, pads, percussion, and effects to play, mix, and randomize. There’s save/recall so you can edit on the go, and after you’ve panned and tempo-tweaked your tracks, you can export them to your laptop/desktop as high-quality WAV files (WiFi required). Organized, like iZotope’s initial iDrum applications, into genres, GrooveMaker currently offers three editions: Club, including 189 loops (130-135-145 BPM) for $4.99/€3.99; Hip-Hop, including 315 loops (80-85-90-100 bpm) for $9.99/€7.99; and House, including 315 loops (120-123-125-127 bpm) for $9.99/€7.99. Additionally, a fully functional free edition allows you to preview 125 House and Hip-Hop loops (78-125 bpm). Go put a little rockit in your pocket.
