Boys Noize, DTL Play SummerStage

Building on their organization’s constantly evolving tastes, NYC’s Central Park SummerStage will play host to a performance by Boys Noize , Drop the Lime , and Canyons early next month. It’s a bit of a switch for the 23-year-old festival, whose other upcoming guests include the likes of Bettye Lavette, Budos Band, M. Ward, and Mike Watt, and we love that their adventurous booking policies always keep them way ahead of the curve. The free Boyz Noise/Drop the Lime show happens August 8.

Madlib and Guilty Team Up as OJ Simpson

One of Detroit’s finest MCs, Guilty Simpson, has teamed up once again with Madlib for a full-length on Stones Throw under the OJ Simpson moniker. With Simpson’s gruff baritone flowing over Madlib’s dark and chunky carnival beats on “Coroner’s Music,” the album’s title track and first single promises some real hip-hop, echoing J Dilla’s productions with shades of DJ Premier coming through. In the current climate, where rappers are often mere accessories, this duo has crafted a sound that glows with attitude and loyalty to hip-hop’s roots.

Coroner’s Music drops this fall on Stones Throw.

Artist to Watch: Pictureplane

Who:Pictureplane
Where: Denver, CO

Self-described art weirdo Travis Egedy may call the Mile High City home, but his ears are clearly open to sounds from farther afield—maybe even outer space, if his musings about UFOs and expanded consciousness are to be taken seriously. Part of Denver’s Rhinoceropolis warehouse/art collective, as Pictureplane, Egedy makes rough-around-the-edges dance music that’s equally informed by classic rave, ’80s dance pop, U.K. grime, and funky. He’s already remixed artists like Crystal Castles and HEALTH, and his debut album, Dark Rift, drops this month on Lovepump United.

Exclusive: Ikonika “Phonelines VIP”

Originally intended as the flip-side to Ikonika‘s Hyperdub debut, Please, this is one hell of a wonky dubstep tune. Bloopy synth arpeggiations, double-time rhythmic structure, and a distanced mix make for a perfect dubstep track; bizarre structural similarities to Glassjaw‘s “Siberian Kiss” also add to the intrigue. Although well-known to her fans, “Phonelines VIP” has never before been available for purchase; instead, Ikonika has decided to offer up the track for free download exclusively through XLR8R.

Codebreaker “Follow Me (The Juan Maclean Remix)”

The Juan Maclean gives Codebreaker‘s summer hit the remix treatment, transforming an Azoto-like Italo-disco number into a Chicago house track, replete with lovely piano flourishes and stretches of acid squelch. Though a bit darker than the original, the remix maintains a bouncing, clubby vibe that might make Daft Punk blush.

Black Meteoric Star Black Meteoric Star

You have to hand it to DFA Records. Hailed as the epicenter of the so-called dance-punk movement at the beginning of the decade, the NYC imprint has managed to retain its vanguard status, even as the scene that brought the label into the limelight has faded into the background. While roster heavyweights like LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, The Juan MacLean, and The Rapture might not be the ‘next big thing’ anymore, they’ve certainly retained their cool points. Even better, these days music critics have stopped insisting on examining these acts in terms of their punk credentials—with James Murphy & Co. openly idolizing leftfield disco producers and experimental dance acts like Liquid Liquid, it’s long been clear that DFA is a whole lot more about the “dance” part of the dance-punk equation anyways. As newer acts like Hercules & Love Affair, Holy Ghost!, and Runaway have been added to the roster, the label’s role as a provider of high-quality, forward-thinking dance music has only solidified.

Black Meteoric Star may be another addition to the label line-up, but producer Gavin Russom’s name isn’t a new one for DFA diehards. Working in tandem with Delia Gonzalez, Russom dropped a series of epic analog-synth soundscapes that eschewed disco classicism, not to mention a steady 4/4 beat, for a chance to update the mind-blowing sonic exploits of artists like Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. However, their Days of Mars album did include the song “Relevée,” which became an unexpected dancefloor smash once techno don Carl Craig remixed it. The experience appears to have been transformative, as Black Meteoric Star finds Russom, who has since relocated from New York to Berlin, utilizing his custom-built synths to create out-and-out acid house workouts. Similar in feel to the early Chicago house sounds of TRAX Records, what the music (deliberately) lacks in precision it more than makes up for with fuzzed-out acid tweaks and unbridled groove. Yet although Russom may have picked up the pace for Black Meteoric Star, he hasn’t changed when it comes to self-editing—the six-track record clocks in at more than 66 minutes. Album closers “Dream Catcher” and “Dawn” may turn down the adrenaline, but at 14 and 18 minutes respectively, they aren’t exactly easily digestible.

Ghostly Releases iPhone App Today

Today, musical juggernaut Ghostly International released a unique application for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Ghostly Discovery . The application works as a sort of mood-reading jukebox containing Ghostly’s and Spectral Sound’s vast catalogs, allowing users to construct parameters for what they want to listen to based on their emotional state, desired tempo, and digital/organic preference. After setting these parameters, the application generates a unique playlist for the user, with the options of reading artist bios and purchasing MP3s available. Ghostly Discovery is downloadable for free at the iTunes Store.

Hauntologists “A1”

Hauntologists is the most recent collaboration of electronic musicians and producers Stefan Schneider (of To Rococo Rot and Belle Orchestre) and Jay Ahern. Taken from their recently released EP2, “A1” displays Hauntologists’ penchant for mixing traditional African instruments with more synthesized sounds, resulting in a minimal techno track that is perfect for the post-minimal climate—in a way, the duo’s work evokes Villalobos’ lo-frequency, mid-tempo mind-melters, but with more discrete melodic content.
