AudioCubes: Colorful Controllers Get Updated

Ready to play musical cubes? If there was ever any doubt that 2008 could be the technological “future” we’ve been anticipating for decades, here’s one instrument that will get your head spinning. Belgian music technology company Percussa will debut new software for its AudioCubes hardware platform this January, at the winter NAMM show in Anaheim, CA.

By moving one or more of these colorfully lit cubes in various directions, a musician can trigger loops or play sounds in programs such as Ableton Live, Reason, Max/MSP, or any MIDI-assignable music software program. For instance, if you moved a cube 90-degrees clockwise, you might trigger a drum loop; move it another 30-degrees and a guitar loop fires off as the Cube lights up in a brilliant color.

Although AudioCubes have existed for about three years, the software update makes the devices more accessible than ever. Now, as many as 4 receiver cubes can be directly connected per computer, allowing users the ability to create with two hands or interact with a partner. As musicians twist or move each cube, real-time changes appear as different colors in the Cubes.

Other improvements will include:

-Visual display of MIDI note triggers and manual triggering with a mouse.

-The working range of controllers can be adjusted and scaled using sliders.

-Every connected cube now has individual color control through three MIDI In controllers (red/green/blue channels).

-Windows Vista and Mac OSX Leopard ready.

In addition, AudioCubes is bundled with a 400 MB Loopmasters sounds library and a template with pre-assigned controllers for Ableton Live 6 or 7, as well as increased compatibilities for Reason 4 devices and Max/MSP.

Percussa will also release a new sound generator software that allows the cubes to be used without a computer. This will be available as a free download for all AudioCubes users after the NAMM show.

No Age “My Life’s Alright Without You”

This is like three songs in one. It opens with raw drums reminiscent of Joy Division, then dives into some Jesus & Mary Chain distortion before bringing it home with a 1970s Ramones-inspired melody. This song is like a music-appreciation course in punk and goth. I like it–especially the drum and guitar sounds.

Gregor Tresher A Thousand Nights

German DJ and producer Gregor Tresher has been making quite a name for himself across European dance floors ever since the Datapunk imprint dropped his Still EP in 2005. The Frankfurt native follows up on the success of that 12” with A Thousand Nights, a collection of previously released singles and remixes assembled on CD for the first time, that reinforces his status as one of Germany’s finest electro/tech-house DJs. Throughout the album, Tresher designs dim, dance-fueled atmospheres with sparse electronics, usually by boosting a plinking microhouse rhythm with a faint synth gurgle or a prickly, electro melody. An ecstatic, moving album for those who favor peak-time minimal techno.

Best of 2007 by DJ Ulysses

A Manhattan techno long-player on his favorite blips and bleeps of the year.

Best Artist
Some people that kept my attention this year: Daso, Dusty Kid, Samim, Chaim, Minilogue, Paul Ritch, Stefan Goldman, Matthew Dear.

Worst Artist
Mims. You could write a linguistics dissertation on everything wrong about “This is Why I’m Hot”. [He] does a great job of pandering to the Lowest Common Denominator. Then again, when did that Paris Hilton album come out?

Best Album
I’m a cranky old bastard, so it usually takes me a while to warm up to new music. My favorite album that I purchased in 2007 is Tago Mago by Can, which was released in 1971. As you can see, I have some catching up to do.

Worst Album
It’s only a 12″, but I really hate “Techno Vocals” by Marc Houle. It’s a joke, I know, but it’s a one-liner and gets tiresome almost instantly.

Best Single/12″
Samim’s “Heater” [on] Get Physical. It’s the best way to get Germans dancing to cumbia. It’s a very original and fun song, and way more interesting than all that minimal techno out there.

Best City and/or Scene
This cranky old man doesn’t go out much anymore. He stays in his dungeon and makes noise.

Best DJ
Me, motherfucker!

Best Music Trend
Tech-house has been making a silent comeback. I’d say half of what is supposed to be “minimal” is really just tech-house. And the rest is unfinished.

Worst Music Trend
The decreasing diversity in the more active musical scenes, and the increasing homogeneity of music, despite the greater access to new music many people have these days.

What will be big in 2008?
Thugfucker Records and Sodium Records, two labels I’ve been working for/with/etc., will be huge. Wait and see.

Biggest/best music-related beef of 2007
Serato vs. TraktorScratch.

Best Music Hardware
I’ve been doing some research into finally going to digital DJing. Serato seems to have the easiest interface and the most stable platform, though TraktorScratch has a much better-sounding A/D converter and more effects. I haven’t actually made the purchase yet, but I think I’m going with Serato.

Best Music Software
I’ve been very happy with the quality of the Spectrasonics plug-ins. They all sound great and bring an unexpected, natural feel to each song.

Best Shoe
I still dig my Vans.

Best style trend
Whoever convinced the hip-hop kids [to wear] long, skinny jeans and loud neon colors deserves a medal.

Worst style trend
Those ugly ’80s sunglasses are getting worse.

White Girl Lust “Go & Get It feat. Spoek”

White Girl Lust has been championing club rap for the last year, mixing hip-hop with gritty, bass-heavy dance music and catching the ears of The Rub and Flosstradamus. Taken from the West Coast Bump EP, “Go & Get It” marks the production team’s first commercial release and features Spoek of South African group Sweat X.

The Four Mints Gently Down Your Stream

Most soul music from the 1960s and ’70s was determinedly single-oriented. Small labels issued one or two cuts by an artist, and, barring that almost-unheard-of hit, moved on callously to the next cat or kitten. When albums did come out, they were often collections by proven hit makers, not relatively unknown wonders from Columbus, Ohio, like The Four Mints. It all makes Gently Down Your Stream, the Mints’ near-perfect 1973 LP, more remarkable; its re-release (finally!) by The Numero Group’s new album-oriented imprint, Asterisk, more exciting. With some of the greatest crooners (“Row My Boat”) and dancers (“Keep on Loving You”) ever recorded, Gently is that great anomaly: A must-have soul album.

The 12 Days of Christmas: Day 12

Ableton Live

I love field recordings. I love ambient music, New Age, and sleeping. For a while now, I have been formulating a plan for a podcast series of re-edits of ambient music, classic New Age, and found sounds, solely intended for relaxation and sleep. For this project, I knew I needed something that I could sketch out my ideas with that’s as intuitive for me to use as design programs like Illustrator. After many unsuccessful tries with janky setups involving samplers, delay pedals, CD players, tape decks, turntables, and MiniDisc players, I finally decided it would be much more productive to use something computer-based. My beat-making friends all swear by Ableton Live so I decided to go for it. Right away, I was so impressed at how incredibly easy it was to use. I was immediately able to get my ideas out and start moving forward with them. Live’s interface, is user-friendly for someone visually oriented like myself, and way less confusing than Pro Tools or most sequencers. And I also discovered how much fun it is to DJ with, and how sweet it is to not cart around a giant crate of vinyl and books of CDs.

Pon Di Wire: Munga Gets Dishonorable, World Clash Photo, Xmas Reggae Shots

One of Jamaica’s premier young video directors, Jay Will, has a new long-form music video out featuring new deejay Rally Bop. Directed with a narrative approach, the video is an ill-fated tale of three friends (all portrayed by Bop in different costumes) planning a robbery. With plot twists galore, this is not your average dancehall video. Will has previously directed videos for M.I.A’s “Boyz,” Shaggy’s “Church Heathen,” Beenie Man’s “Dreaming Of You,” Mr. Vegas’ “Hot Wuk,” and more.

Outaroad and several other dancehall news sites are reporting that an onstage skirmish between “Vocoder King” Munga Honorebel and Portmore star Deva Bratt broke out at Stone Love’s anniversary dance. The fight started when Brat refused to relinquish the stage to Munga; Security restored order just as Munga had drawn a knife and things threatened to deteriorate.

The 2007 Sting concert on December 26 will be missing a number of key dancehall acts. Various artists have been announcing their absence from the anticipated event, including Beenie Man, Sizzla, Macka Diamond, and Errup. Speaking of Ras Moses, the Dancehall Doctor, a.k.a. Beenie Man, you can grab a free MP3 Christmas track, courtesy of 357 Records producer Mario C and One876.com.

A Jamaican minister recently vowed to work with Canadian officials to take down alleged pirate audio website AudioMaxxx. The site trades in mix CDs and compilations and has been repeatedly asked by artists such as Morgan Heritage and Vybz Kartel to discontinue business.

Sound clash selector David Rodigan in an Elvis suit? Yep, you can see that and other dramatic photos from the World Clash New York: Game Over event at NowadayzDancehall.com. Speaking of Game Over, the official full audio recordings from the clash are available as high quality download files at promoters Irish & Chin’s website.

A full list of February 2008’s Reggae Academy Awards events has been announced. The ceremony will take place Sunday, February 24, at the National Indoor Sports Centre, and will be preceded by an artists’ road tour that stops in Montego Bay, St. Thomas, Ocho Rios, Savanna- La- Mar, Clarendon, and Kingston.

Several artists, including TOK, Macka Diamond, and Voicemail, will be working through the holidays without rest for Christmastime in Jamaica. Voicemail’s Kevin said, “Wi a guh Japan for three shows and will be in New York on Christmas Day, and then back in Jamaica for Boxing Day. But no family time, this is going to be the first Christmas away from family.” Meanwhile, vintage songbird Marcia Griffiths has joined young heartthrob Da’Ville to cover Luther Vandross’s classic Christmas tune, “Every Year, Every Christmas.”

Mr. Rock & Soul, the Rocksteady music master Alton Ellis, is still quite ill and being treated for cancer at a London hospital. As his family keeps vigil, the singer, known for his hits “I’m Just A Guy,” “Can I Change My Mind,” and “Cry Tough,” is said to be making progress.

Darondo Live in San Francisco Tonight

The abridged history of S.F. legend Darondo goes like this: He started recording low-rider soul, blues, and r&b in the early ’70s, making a name for himself through his releases, connections, and the white Rolls Royce he drove around the Bay Area. But three 45s in, Darondo ceased producing music and all but disappeared.

Fast forward to 2007 and his music is undergoing a revival, thanks to DJs like Giles Peterson, who have been dropping Darondo’s music into their sets. And let’s not forget the good people at Ubiquity, who have collected the six tracks from those original singles and compiled them onto one disc, along with three previously unreleased songs. Now, the man himself heads back to the stage, with a one-off live show in San Francisco tonight.

Head to the label’s site to listen to and purchase the Let My People Go comp, watch videos, and read more about this artist.
