Pampa Records’ favorite Swede, Studio Barnhus co-boss Axel Boman, returns to the fold for his first release on the Hamburg-based label since “Purple Drank”, an effort widely being considered to one of the tunes of 2010. His follow-up on Pampa is 1979, a two-track EP that’s everything we hoped it would be from Boman: sentimental and convention-busting, and a fitting follow-up to label boss DJ Koze’s prior release on the imprint, the standout slow-burner “XTC.”
The EP leads off with title track “1979”: a pensive, cool-toned house track that takes its time and breathes with a restrained touch, gently soothing with shimmering chords and bare bones percussion across its ten-minute meditation. On the flip, “Nokturn (Gran Finale)” is a grand carnivalesque affair with endless movement and dominant looping Latin rhythms. Ever the master manipulator, Boman leads us through a screeching ascension that seems primed for takeoff, before cooling down the groove and allowing the robust double-bass phrase to take the fore in what will likely be another big release for Pampa.
