With his latest LP, British rhymer Kid Acne brings brisk, old-school-inspired beats together with his own youthful idiosyncrasies. What’s admirable about this MC is how he lets his personality loose. On the bottom-heavy “Don’t Pity Me,” he recalls his awkward first experiences listening to gangster rap; then on the golden era-leaning “Worst Luck,” he hilariously gets self-deprecating while exposing his misfortunes. Amid his lightheartedness, though, Kid Acne is no slouch on the mic, as his party-sparking flow effortlessly meshes with the classic hip-hop and occasional punk sounds of producers Req One and Ross Orton. If you can equally appreciate The Beastie Boys, Boogie Down Productions, and Fawlty Towers, then this album is a must.
