Amsterdam Dance Event kicks off this week and with so many events, talks, and conferences to choose from, we thought we’d narrow down the field and present our top picks, including those from the party offering and the conference. The TRIBE Invites Yoyaku—Day and Night party
October 20; Bret / October 21; RADION
This year, Paris-based booking agency, store, label, and distributor Yoyaku will host two events at ADE, showcasing their impressive roster of artists in collaboration with The TRIBE. Headed up by Mayaan Nidam, the daytime party—which goes down at Radion—will also feature performances by Zendid, Lamache B2B Lowris, Christoffer Zaza, and Doris Nicholas. The party then moves to the intimate settings of Bret Nightclub with Varhat B2B Janeret, Oshana (live), Roger Gerressen, and Children of Valis closing out the night. Be sure to check out Zendid’s recent XLR8R podcast, featuring over an hour of hypnotic deep minimal house gems to get you in the mood for what will certainly be a great party.

October 18; Claire Nightclub
Slapfunk Records was established in Utrecht, Holland In 2011 and has since gone on to become one of the scene’s most impressive imprints with releases from Ryan Elliot, Bicep, Detroit Swindle, MOLLY, and more. They’re now hosting a special party at ADE to celebrate the best in house music with Leo Pol, Ryan Elliott, Detroit legend Daniel Bell, and more spread across two rooms at the Claire nightclub in the center of Amsterdam. Expect timeless tunes from Bell and groovy modern house from Leo pol.

BON A PARTE x Imprints Records x ADE

Bon A Parte have been quietly going about their business with minimum fuss, all the while ensuring quality bookings and a great atmosphere. The Amsterdam natives have booked the like of Evan Baggs, Saoirse, and ATEQ but it’s their ADE line-up this year that shows that they have really taken a leap forward with four quality selectors that could each easily be the main attraction. Teaming up with Imprint records, home of some of the best minimal techno and house around at the moment, label heads Domenica Rosa and Riccardo will play alongside Markus Sommer and 100h, who both have releases on Imprints. Be prepared for a sonic journey through house, minimal, techno, and garage from some top-quality selectors.

VBX have certainly made a statement at this year’s ADE with arguably some of the biggest lineups of the festival. They kick things off with a night with tINI and the gang, featuring tINI, Molly, Makcim, and Pelle & Roon at popular venue Bret. The second event is, arguably, the biggest of ADE and finds VBX teaming up with FRCC, Ricardo Villalobos’ Frequency Resonance Remote Control, for a lineup that oozes talent with Ricardo Villalobos, Seth Troxler, Zip, Sonja Moonear, Steve Rachmad, Nicolas Lutz, and Spokenn (Ferro & Reiss) in the industrial setting of Warehouse Elementenstraat. Following that, on October 20, VBX will host an afterhours with Dyed Soundorom, Voigtmann, Max Vaahs, Makcim, and Reiss. To round off the marathon of musical talent on offer, VBX has invited Praslesh (Raresh & Praslea), Fumiya Tanaka, Francesco Del Garda, Ferro, and Kristina to throw down at Shelter. Even picking just one of these would be a difficult choice so a quadruple header might just be the only way to do it.

October 20; Chicago Social Club
PIV kicks off ADE with a party at the intimate Bret club on the October 19 with Archie Hamilton, Paolo Rocco, Alix Alvarez, and more. Expect minimal house grooves perfect for the dancefloor. The following night, PIV returns with a couple of the biggest legends in house music today, with Boo Williams and Kenny Dope playing at the appropriately named Chicago Social Club. We can’t think of a more fitting place to see these two house music pioneers at work.

Tremor presents I.T. x Freerotation x Second Wave at RADION

Interdimensional Transmissions is heading over from Detroit to collaborate with Tresor, one of the most famous party institutions in Berlin, and Freerotaion, one of the finest small festivals in operation. The event will be held at RADION with XLR8R favorite and Detroit native DJ Stingray, Beverly Hills 808303 (aka I-F / InterFerence), DJ Bone (electro set), Ectomorph (live), Peverelist, Steevio & Suzybee (live), Erika, Mercal, Marlon, Benjamins & LEWIE.
Cartel X Paradiso ADE 2018: Motor City Drum Ensemble & Hunee
October 21; Paradiso
Hunee and Motor City Drum Ensemble are both known for their unrelenting digging and smooth-as-silk sets for of up-tempo house, soul, disco, and funk—and it’s in the club environment that they really shine. Held at Paradiso, one of Amsterdam’s most famous concert halls, this beautiful venue is the perfect spot to see these two artists in their prime. Also playing are David Vunk, Tenzers, Beesmunt Soundsystem, Pablo Discobar Soundsystem, Makcim, and Just Pete
October 19—22; De School
Opening on Friday, October 19 and running through the weekend until Monday, October 22, this party is not for the faint of heart. The venue, which used to be a school, is more than a nightclub: it also has a concert venue, a restaurant, a café, and an exhibition space. Over the three days of Het Weekend, you can catch Marcel Dettmann, Batu, Jasper Wolff, and Maarten Mittendorff alongside a huge range of predominantly Dutch DJs—you can also expect some beautiful art installations, a staple of De School.
Awakenings ADE X Maceo Plex Presents Mosaic at Gashouder
October 19; Gashouder
If techno is your flavor of dance music then this event is a must. Maceo Plex has pulled together some of the biggest and best names to play Gashouder, one of the most spectacular clubs around. The lighting show, production, and overall enormity of the venue makes for a spectacular visceral and auditory experience up there with some of the best clubs in the world. As usual with Awakenings, they’ve managed to get the best techno DJs around, including Ben UFO, Floating Points, Maceo Plex, Helena Hauff, Young Marco, and Architectural.
ADE ’18 Closing After Party DRUMS
October 21; Undercurrent
For ADE, DRUMS has gone all out with a Romanian dominated line-up featuring Amorf, Barac, Cap, and Priku, among others. They’ve also enlisted Vlada, our favorite DJ from Sunwaves Festival last year, Ion Ludwig, and Giegling’s DJ Dustin, Edward, and SaPa. Running for 24 hours, the party takes place in two rooms at Undercurrent and is the perfect way to close out ADE—just make sure you have the stamina left.

“Dance music and politics are intrinsically intertwined and have been since its origins.” A question we regularly ask within our society: does being in a position of artistic influence mean that you take on the role of helping you or a specific community to create change? Being an artist in the public eye automatically puts you in a position where you can implement change, so should it be necessary to do so? These are questions and themes that are more relevant now than ever, so to hear about examples of artists really making a difference in their communities may inspire you and others to do the same. This talk is hosted by Blond:ish (CA), Dave Clarke (GB), Dominic Peters (Goldfish, SA), Sam Feldt (Artist, NL), and Tala Mortada (LB), with Alison Tickell (Julie’s Bicycle, UK) leading the conversation.
