Despite the pun on the word “milquetoast” in the title of Avalon Emerson‘s latest track (you may remember when we posted “Horoscope” earlier this year), “Milk Toast” is far from bland. The San Francisco-based producer’s cut deals in shades of headiness, intensity, and stripped-down moodiness, all of which is stretched over a bouncing 4/4 clomp and peppered with her own warped vocal samples. High-pitched, unnerving pings reach a metallic crescendo around the middle of Avalon Emerson’s track before settling back down into its head-nodding hypnotism.
