Iceland-born-Denmark-bred Gunnar Thor Viggosson is probably most known as one-half of 76-79 with Tommy Vicari Jnr, but it’s as Thorsteinssøn that Viggosson released his latest album, Academy Of Heroes, on Pets Recordings.
The sprawling Academy Of Heroes is inspired by Solar Industry Radio, a creative project in which Viggosson would begin with a made up artist or band name, then the artwork, and then the music—in styles and genres ranging from cosmic funk to Scandinavian disco and ambient noise collages. From these experiments, Viggosson and Pets collated the 14 tracks that make up the immersive Academy Of Heroes.
In celebration of the album’s release, Viggosson and Pets have shared bonus cut “Not Really” as today’s XLR8R download. With its sun-tinged synths, swinging percussion, and strutting bassline, “Not Really” is about as funky a track as you’ll likely hear in the house spectrum. You can pick the track up via WeTransfer below, with Academy Of Heroes available here.
