Philipp Jung, co-founder of Get Physical and one half of M.A.N.D.Y., has passed away, aged 55.
Philipp was a close friend and collaborator to XLR8R and its staff and family. We are heartbroken and will miss him!
His contributions to the electronic music ecosystem were truly groundbreaking. In the early 2000s, Jung teamed up with Patrick Bodmer to form M.A.N.D.Y., a DJ and production duo that pioneered a new melodic, minimal sound. The duo became extremely influential, gaining international recognition with releases such as “Tonite” and “Body Language,” their collaboration with Booka Shade.
In 2002, Jung co‑founded Berlin‑based label Get Physical Music alongside Patrick Bodmer (M.A.N.D.Y.), DJ T. (Thomas Koch), and Booka Shade (Walter Merziger, Arno Kammermeier, Peter Hayo). The label quickly became one of the most renowned imprints in electronic music.
Alongside Get Physical, Jung helped steer the creative direction of its sister label Kindisch, which focused on deeper, more hypnotic late‑night and experimental sounds. He later launched METAPHYSICAL, an LP-focused imprint that allowed exploration of indie‑dance, ambient soundscapes, and broader, non‑club structures.
After decades of intensive touring, Jung stepped back from M.A.N.D.Y. around 2018 to focus more on his health, label work, and new creative avenues. In recent years, he split his time between Berlin and Costa Rica, curated catalogue projects like ‘Rewind Forward Vol. 1,’ and continued to champion emerging talent and revisit key moments from the Get Physical catalog.
