Based in Liverpool, SertOne is a budding producer who focuses his efforts on the more juke-indebted sides of electronic production. Pulled from his recent Mouthful EP is “Firewerks,” a track whose collection of restless, skittering percussion is met by a downtrodden chord progression and a tasteful assemblage of repitched vocal murmurs. Out this week, SertOne’s Mouthful EP—which is available in both digital and cassette from—can be streamed in full after the jump.
Los Angeles producers Delroy Edwards (pictured above) and Benedek will release a collaborative 7″ together via the DC-based PPU imprint. Operating together as Rx, Edwards (whose LA Club Resource label dropped a new 12″ earlier this week) and Benedek have put together two woozy funk exercises for their Strung Out 7″. Donning tags like “Calihaze” and “Smogprog,” the record’s SoundCloud preview offers brief glimpses into the pair’s upcoming collaborative effort, which is said to drop sometime in “summer 2014.” In the meantime, Edwards’ and Benedek’s upcoming 7″ as Rx can be previewed via the player below.
Last year saw West Coast vocalist/producer Natasha Kmeto issue her debut LP, Crisis, via Portland’s Dropping Gems label/collective. Now, Kmeto has signaled that her sophomore full-length will arrive later this year, sharing a soul-drenched new single in the process.
“Inevitable” is the first cut to surface from the Stateside talent’s forthcoming 10-track LP of the same name, which will appear via the Federal Prism imprint (ran by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek) in “late 2014.” Furthermore, the record is said to have been recorded entirely at the Federal Prism Studios in Los Angeles with the aid of Sitek. While we await the full details of Kmeto’s upcoming sophomore album, the vocal-heavy “Inevitable” can be streamed in full below before it becomes available as a digital single on Tuesday, June 17.
After offering a track for free download just last week, the ceaselessly prolific Machinedrum has shared a new production which is set to appear as part of the Adult Swim Singles series. Entitled “Want Me,” the single is—for the most part—a half-time indebted track, one which finds Machinedrum flexing some G-funk style muscle with gliding synths and bulbous bass tones flowing between the tunes ravey piano stabs.

Hailing from Aarhus, Denmark, Variete is a young producer who released his debut outing, the Luddite EP, via the Origami Sound label earlier this month. Described as a collection of “no-nonsense techno for the heads,” the EP features four strong-armed productions from the artist including “Ring Out.” Featured here, the track concentrates its efforts towards crafting cold atmospherics, which are allowed to effortlessly float amongst the track’s chugging rhythmic components; bulbous kicks pump and sharp hats skitter across as steel-lined claps cut through the fog, and—as promised—absolutely no nonsense is had.
The Autonomous Africa 12″ series, founded by Optimo co-founder JD Twitch back in 2012, aims to raise funds in support of development initiatives in African countries. For this forthcoming edition, due out midway through the summer, the Glaswegian joins forces with series stalwart Auntie Flo, General Ludd, and Midland. All proceeds from the sale of the EP go to Mtandika Mission in Tanzania, a charity operated by Midland’s parents in the country of his birth. (Last year’s sophomore volume, coupled with the proceeds generated from events held in Glasgow and London, raised several thousand pounds for the same cause.)
According to JD Twitch: “Many of the problems Africa faces are a result of outside interference by other countries, and as the 21st century progresses we will see the continued pillage of African resources to feed the global capitalist machine on an unprecedented scale. Corrupt and greedy regimes gladly sell their land and mineral wealth to finance their own extravagant lifestyles while the vast majority of ordinary people see little or no improvement in their own lives. An autonomous Africa run by the people for the people, where African land is predominantly used to feed African people and Africa’s vast wealth of resources is used to benefit the people of Africa seems the only logical way forward. Autonomous Africa’s goal is to highlight this message and here presents to you four tracks of African-inspired grooves.”
Autonomous Africa III (available to preview along with a tracklist below) is due out in late July/August on 12″ vinyl with digital to follow, and a compilation album of music from throughout Africa is also reportedly in the works for release later in the year.

Berlin-based techno maverick Marcel Fengler has disclosed details for a six-date North American tour this summer, beginning in San Francisco on July 3. Over the years, Fengler has built up a formidable skill set as a DJ, notably as a resident for Berlin’s famed Berghain club. He’s also issued a slew of singles and EPs for Ostgut Ton, in addition to last year’s Fokus full-length and a subsequent remix 12″, and heads his own Index Marcel Fengler imprint. Here is a fun one for to start Friday off right. Set to appear on the vinyl version of Unknown to the Unknown boss DJ Haus‘ upcoming Thug Houz Anthems Vol. 3 EP, “Woo Yeh (James Brown Bmore Edit)” delivers exactly what its title suggests. On it, Bmore-style breaks meet chopped up James Brown loops and, of course, a healthy amount of “Woo yeh!” shouts can be heard over the club-ready edit. “Woo Yeh (James Brown Bmore Edit)” is set to be joined by three other new productions from DJ Haus when Thug Houz Anthems Vol. 3 sees its release sometime before the month of June is through.
Italy’s long-running electronic music festival Alfa MiTo Club To Club, based out of Turin, has disclosed the first batch of names for its 14th edition this coming fall. Among those included in the “avant-pop” roster are Canadian producer Caribou, SBTRKT, and Apparat, while Marcel Dettmann and Ben Frost are set to deliver doses of heavier, darker-toned techno and sound design. The neon-global club sounds of Future Brown and Fatima Al Qadiri are also scheduled to have a showing, as are British outfit Jungle and Chet Faker. In the bassier camp are Fade to Mind affiliate Kelela, Evian Christ, and Millie & Andrea, the duo of Miles Whittaker (of Demdike Stare) and Andy Stott, while R&B-influenced vocalist Jessy Lanza and melodic techno newcomer Recondite round out the announcement.
This year’s festival, under the theme “The Trojan Horse,” adds an extra day of programming and new locations onto past events, and runs from November 5–9 in parallel with the city’s Contemporary Art Week. All new elements will be announced in the forthcoming weeks, and XLR8R‘s review of last year’s edition can be revisited here.
Dennis McFarlane (a.k.a. Dego) got his start as one of the founding members of influential London group 4hero, credited as among the earliest purveyors of breakbeat, and his productions—as well as those on his own 2000Black imprint—continue to take cues from the sprawling territories of jazz, soul, and hip-hop. Now, ahead of the release of his upcoming four-track effort for FaltyDL‘s Blueberry label, Dego has divulged funk-inflected EP cut “Nuts!”
The release follows a recent reissue of “This Ain’t Tom And Jerry” under McFarlane’s Cousin Cockroach pseudonym which dropped via Berceuse Heroique back in March, and while an official release date has yet to be announced for his Blueberry EP, the full tracklist and artwork have been included below.
