Video Premiere: Dfalt “Moon Milkshake”

LA beatsmith Dfalt has unveiled a video for “Moon Milkshake,” the closing cut from last month’s Helsinki Beat Tape (Part One) (another track from which we recently offered for download). Created by Sam Cox, the animated video for “Moon Milkshake” serves as a nod to the washed-out, hand-drawn aesthetic of early cartoons, cleverly detailing the humorous happenings in an extraterrestrial pie factory. Cox’s attention to detail is worth noting, particularly evident as one of the factory’s machines unleashes pie filling into empty canisters perfectly in sync with a thudding snare hit. Cox’s lighthearted approach makes for a refreshing, if unlikely, accompaniment to Dfalt’s hip-hop-rooted track.

Gaslamp Killer Recounts a Recent Near-Death Experience

After crashing his scooter early Tuesday morning, LA beat scene mainstay and Low End Theory regular Gaslamp Killer was taken to a nearby hospital where he learned he had caused extensive internal bleeding and was in need of immediate surgery. Fortunately, he has lived to tell the tale. In an intense interview with LA Weekly which first hit the web on Wednesday, the SoCal producer/DJ recounted the events which led to his incredibly close call and ultimately ended with his spleen being removed. The entire interview can be read here, and while Gaslamp Killer is not seeking any financial help to foot the hospital bill—his insurance covers that—we’re sure well wishes for a speedy recovery are welcome to be sent his way.

Boeboe “Amazon Basin'”*Saturate *

Hailing from Amsterdam, Boeboe is a relatively new production talent who dropped his El Dorado EP this week via the constantly growing Saturate imprint. The neon-flecked “Amazon Basin'” is a fine example of what listeners can expect from the Dutchman’s new EP—namely, streetwise instrumental beats filled to the brim with intergalactic synth work. The tune featured here is one of Boeboe’s particularly futurtistic offerings, but not one without a bit of soulful touch coyly placed underneath it all. The rest of the El Dorado EP—which features remixes by G Jones and others—is available as a name-your-price download over on Bandcamp.

Video Premiere: Julien Mier “Ever Lonely”

Ever Lonely,” a standout cut from Dutch producer Julien Mier‘s recent Jane’s Junkyard EP, has now received the video treatment. On its own, Mier’s playful tune conjures up plenty of mechanical images—thanks largely to the intricate, machinist drum work heard throughout—so it only makes sense that the clip’s director, Jurgen Oelen, has based his visual interpretation of the track around a busy assembly line. Perhaps the most impressive take away from Oelen’s clip though, is how well it follows suit with Mier’s constantly evolving tune, progressing right alongside the many unpredictable turns and glitched-out elements with just a humble assortment of cartoon-like visuals.

Nicolas Jaar Launches New Label, Preps Compilation

New York based DJ/producer and former XLR8Rpodcast contributor Nicolas Jaar has—somewhat surpisingly—stopped operations at his Clown and Sunset imprint in favor of launching a new label called Other People. Jaar’s new label venture will drop its first release this September in the form of a 13-track compilation entitled Trust. The collection will feature contributions from a slew of formerly Clown and Sunset-affiliated artists such as Valentin Stip, Acid Pauli, Nikita Quasim, and, of course, Jaar himself. The esteemed producer has stated his new label will act as a “serial label,” explaining that “like a magazine, we [will] deliver new content each week. Every Sunday, our members [will] receive a new issue.” The full tracklist for Other People’s forthcoming debut compilation can be found below. (via Resident Advisor)

DJ Q “Makaveli”**

UK garage and bassline maverick DJ Q has had a busy year thus far, having already released two singles via Local Action under his own name and another via Unknown to the Unknown under his Classified alias. And it looks like it’s about to get busier, as the producer will soon kick off a series of five EPs called Q Bass Trax. The first of these is due to see release on July 29 via his own Q Recordings imprint, and presents two playful, sample-driven tunes, “Big” and “Come With Me.” Bonus cut “Makaveli” is a hybrid slice of bass-heavy, eski/bassline production work which marks a bit of a change of tack from DJ Q’s lighter, vocal-led fare of late. In addition to “Makaveli,” we’ve been treated to the streaming premiere of Q Bass Trax 1 (artwork above), after the jump.

Kate Simko “Your Love feat. Jem Cooke”

The No. 19 Music label can do a few things well, but blazing originality hasn’t been a hallmark of the Canadian tech-house imprint founded by Art Department and Nitin. This holds true for the newest single “Your Love” from Kate Simko, which features yearning vocals from frequent collaborator Jem Cooke. Unfortunately, the track lacks the sensuality of her past work and instead functions as a blurry emotional interlude.

Simko starts out ably enough with sandpapered claps and a corkscrewing bassline, but piano chords quickly intrude on the proceedings. Floating shapelessly, they remove any possible tension from the vocal as they bubble throughout the track in 8-bar patterns. Cooke’s repeated refrain of “ready for your love” could be either submissive or assertive, but the uncertainty is spoiled by the piano’s uprooting presence, which makes her seem more anthemic than intriguingly disjointed. Extended string samples take the track to treacly new heights, yet overall it sounds unfinished, chugging along complacently in search of an interesting change.

Tevo Howard, who performs with Simko as PolyRhythmic, maintains a gurgling Depeche Mode synth line as the guiding melody for his remix, resulting in a version that’s more electro and haphazard. New Jersey house hero Kerri Chandler contributes his “Bob Beaman Vocal Mix,” named for the famed Munich nightclub where mixed down his final version, and it’s a rollicking jack built around a bulbous two-note bassline. Chandler doesn’t do too many remixes nowadays, but here he lets his signature crackling percussion take center stage, translating Cooke’s vocal tics into flares of emotion by using her voice as an ornamental building block instead of an inevitable peak. His instrumental version is even better, as it highlights the convulsive breakdown and reshapes the piano in a way that avoids the vague mist of the original.

Video: Soft Metals “Tell Me”

After releasing its sophomore full-length, Lenses, this week via Captured Tracks, synth-pop duo Soft Metals have shared a borderline NSFW video for album track “Tell Me.” Using the record’s artwork as a jumping point, the video features an intense make-out session, seen through a filtered lens whose colors flare and shift as the percolating track bounce along.

Press Play: Machinedrum, Mount Kimbie, Disclosure, SBTRKT, and More

This star-studded edition of Press Play might be about as good as it gets as far as round ups of streaming audio and video are concerned. Seriously, though, we have all sorts of premieres, remixes, mini-docs, record streams, and more from artists like Machinedrum, Mount Kimbie, Kyle Hall, Moby, Disclosure, DJ Rashad, Zed Bias, and SBTRKT, among others. It’s a whole lot to take in, so we suggest that all parties interested dive into this sizable offering of music after the jump.

First up, we have the premiere of Machinedrum’s remix for AMIT’s “Human Warfare.” Given the chance to rework the heavy-handed original, Machinedrume softens its blow a bit, but not without injecting the tune with a healthy amount of lightning-fast drums in the process.

In this new mini-doc, UK duo Mount Kimbie discusses the evolution of its sound and approach to live performance, even enlisting a quartet of horns to help on the particular show captured by Noisey’s cameras.

The latest producer entrusted with remix duties by Disclosure is Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, who wraps the London pair’s “F For You” with new layers of space-age synthesis.

It’s been a while since we heard new material from SBTRKT, and while this new remix of Drake’s “Girls Love Beyonce” still doesn’t quite satisfy our growing appetite, it surely goes to show that SBTRKT’s production touch still in fine form.

Appearing as the first single from Moby’s forthcoming LP, a video for the string-heavy “A Case for Shame” surfaced this week.

Plucked from the debut release of NYC label Peach, Cromie’s & Sage Caswell’s “Vines” received a particularly deep and spacey remix at the hands of Detroit’s Kyle Hall.

Juke frontrunners DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn shared a new video for their party-minded “She Turnt Up” track—pill-popping, drinking, and a good deal of debauchery ensues.

Avant-pop outfit When Saints Go Machine get an extra does of bass and skip added to its “Iodine” tune thanks to UK veteran Zed Bias (a.k.a. Maddslinky) on this new remix.

Here we have another remix to premiere, this one taking shape as a spacey, disco-minded rework of Thomas Dybdahl’s “But We Did” at the hands of Norwegian mastermind Prins Thomas.

Swedish producer/vocalist Bam Spacey shared the lead cut from his upcoming single for the Ceremony label this week, the synth-powered “River.”

Gonno is the latest talent to step up for Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space label, sharing the cosmic “Are You Asleep” from his new The Noughties EP.

Toronto producer Deebs has self-released an EP entitled Awry and featuring seven tracks of mind-altering beat work. The EP is available both digitally and as a limited-edition cassette.

The ever-growing Cascine label has remastered and rereleased Boat Club’s easy-flowing Caught in the Breeze mini-album, which is now available to stream in full.
