Jackson and His Computerband Shares Another New Track

At the start of this month, we were treated to the first single from Jackson and His Computerband‘s forthcoming second album for Warp, Glow, set to follow-up his debut eight years after the fact. Today, the Parisian producer has delivered a second track from his upcoming record. “Arp #1” is a bouncy, disco-inspired tune with an inherently melodic side that is tempered by the track’s rough, digital scree. Before Glow drops on September 3, Jackson and His Computerband’s new tune can be heard in the player below.

Dynooo “Body God”*Astro:Dynamics*

South London transplant Dynooo will make his debut on the Astro:Dynamics label later this month with Mesh N2 Air, yet another release to come from the consistently growing imprint which sounds as if it was composed inside a machine room of the future. Pulled from Dynooo’s forthcoming cassette, “Body God” pushes a cold, mechanical beat, one which aligns misshapen clangs and chunky clunks into spiralling rhythms, around which an abundance of spacey synth textures and ghostly melodies loosely appear. Likely by design, it’s hard to perceive the exact patterns at work on “Body God,” but it’s also this sense of intrigue that is bound to keep us coming back for more when Dynooo’s nine-track Mesh N2 Air is made available on July 29.

Akkord Reveals Identity, Drops New Mix

After operating for over a year as an anonymous outfit, the Manchester residents of Akkord dropped a new mix today while also revealing the identity of its two producers. As it turns out, the production pair is in fact the combined efforts of Bubblin’ Up artist Synkro and fellow Mancunian Indigo, who—following the success of its recentNavigate EP for Fabric sub-label Houndstooth—were tapped by Resident Advisor to issue its latest podcast. Akkord also discusses the origins of its project and its forthcoming full-length debut in a brief interview, which can be found alongside the pair’s new mix, here.

L.I.E.S. Announces Next Batch of 12″s, Kicks Off New Mix Series

Ever-prolific Brooklyn label L.I.E.S. has already had a strong year, releasing singles from Terekke, Steve Summers, Delroy Edwards, and Florian Kupfer, among others, as well as a full-length from Marcos Cabral (which can be streamed in full, here). And now, the Ron Morelli-headed imprint has just announced its next batch of 12″s, which are set to arrive from a mix of newcomers and previous collaborators. As Juno Plus points out, Miami-based purveyor of skewed house Greg Beato will release the PMA 12″, while Chicago producer Beau Wanzer—who has already appeared on L.I.E.S. as one half of Mutant Beat Dance—is due to release a self-titled EP. More familiar L.I.E.S. artists Bookworms and Jahiliyya Fields will also be dropping their own records, entitled Japanese Zelkova and Pleasure Sentence, respectively. No exact release details have been revealed as yet, but the artwork and tracklist for each release can be found below.

Furthermore, L.I.E.S. has inaugurated a brand-new mix series aiming to feature its artists, as well as “selected artists affiliated with the label,” the first of which is an hour-plus podcast from New York DJ/producer Gunnar Haslam. As the label puts it, “Here, he provides us with a nice long excursion spanning all your favorite genres, sub-genres, and sub-sub-genres. Expertly mixed, well paced, and, yes, even a couple of nice surprises if you’re patient.” L.I.E.S. Podcast 001 can be streamed and downloaded for free, below.

Sigha and Shifted Collaborate as A Model Authority, Launch New Label

UK producers Sigha and Shifted have announced plans to combine their distinct production styles as A Model Authority, a collaborative project which will release its first EP late next month via the pair’s new label of the same name. As Resident Advisor reports, the artists have a rather determined vision for the project, saying that A Model Authority was “born out of the desire to rise above the very modern mediocrity and complacency that surrounds us. A stamp of hard-lined ideals in a pragmatic world, a new order, a new beginning, and a better way of living.” The simply titled Model 001 12″ will debut both the new outfit and label in late August, and is set to be released in both digital and vinyl formats. The forthcoming EP’s tracklist is included below.

Ganz “Brainwash”*Bmkltsch*

Netherlands up-and-comer Ganz is just about to drop his Forever Young EP via Bmkltsch, but before that goes down tomorrow, he’s opted to share a tune from the forthcoming release. “Brainwash” seems to get its inspiration from a variety of styles—sounds which manifest themselves in the form of sultry vocal samples, pulsing kick patterns, and hazy synth solos—and melds those sources together as the track unfolds. And seeing has how the Dutch producer has ties to both the beat-oriented HW&W label and more house-centric outposts like Bmkltsch, it makes sense that the restless artist continues to experiment with his sound.

Debukas “Reach Out Feel”

These days, it’s commonplace for even the most interesting electronic acts to have relatively pedestrian resumes, but Debukas‘ bio is much richer than one might expect. Yes, he spent a number of years as part of Scottish indie band Bis—a group that was actually signed to the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal label—but the artist otherwise known as John Clark also assisted Mylo with Destroy Rock & Roll, had a hand in remixing Justin Timberlake and Gossip, and recorded tracks for Franz Ferdinand. Now on his third release as Debukas for the 2020 Vision label, Clark is siphoning these myriad experiences into a neat package of effective house cuts.

“Reach Out Feel” maintains the underground house proclivities that have garnered his previous Debukas releases so much praise. But here, Clark is also highlighting a pop prowess that he’s typically only hinted at, as densely layered percussion gives way to a bulbous analog bass riff and keyboard melodies plucked from late-’80s electro, with vocals to match. Listening to the track, it becomes clear why Debukas is often compared to acts like Hot Chip.

“Love Plant” strikes a middle ground between Clark’s indie-dance associations and Midwestern influences. Equal parts Detroit funk, Chicago deep, and London 2-step soul, the track is propelled by a cool massage of rippling chords and precision-sliced vocal coloring. There’s still a touch of leftfield pop, but this particular cut won’t inspire any unbridled sing-alongs. The same could be said of “Satellite,” which shies away from pop’s brightness altogether with raindrop melodies, a twisted call and response between stormy clouds of synth bass and distorted strings, and Clark’s most affected lyrics yet.

Returning to the dancefloor, London-based Scotsman Drums of Death reworks “Reach Out Feel” with a meditative house treatment that builds a groove using cymbal clashes, frantic handclaps, and cowbell straight from the Universal Robot Band’s classic “Barely Breaking Even.” Eventually hitting its payload with some fuzzy analog bass and warm key work, Drums of Death’s remix takes shape as pragmatic addition to the package—it’s something working DJs can gravitate towards—but the real weight of this release comes from Clark’s intricate and nuanced electronic pop.

LuckyMe Announces EP from Obey City

One of the heads of the Astro Nautico label and party series, Brooklyn-based DJ/producer Obey City recently signed to high-profile Glasgow label LuckyMe, who will release his debut EP next month. Called Champagne Sounds, the record highlights the producer’s extremely current, genre-bending diversity, presenting a series of R&B-inflected dance tracks that in some ways aren’t far off from the gossamer, hyper-colored sounds of Hudson Mohawke or Rustie. Obey City’s EP is set to drop on August 8, with follow-up vocal EP Merlot Sounds said to be planned for later this year. In the meantime, Champagne Sounds‘ artwork and tracklist can be found below, alongside a sample of the release.
