Color Plus “Pulp”**

It may not be the most obvious piece of insight to glean when first listening to “Pulp,” but Connecticut-based beatsmith Color Plus (a.k.a. Lars Probert) was more commonly heard crafting hip-hop minded, Brainfeeder-esque beats in the past. Beginning with last year’s self-released Cerulean Dream LP, the producer has taken his sound into more experimental territory while also turning to the more addictive tropes of UK garage—the organ stabs, tastefully chopped vocal samples, and one-off drum fills. “Pulp” focuses on those selected garage elements, juggling two simple chord progressions under a beat that flips between 126 and 92 bpm effortlessly. Probert’s evolution parallels much of the East Coast beat scene he is associated with, a scene which is beginning to lurch—sometimes begrudgingly—towards a slightly more experimental, yet dancefloor-focused mindset as of late. At this point, there is no permanent home for “Pulp,” but look for the tune to land on an official release sometime this summer.

Youandewan Times EP

Judging from his slow-but-steady career, Youandewan could easily be characterized as a producer who is in no particular rush. Though the frequency of his releases has certainly increased this year, this follows a long period of silence from the Leeds-based DJ/producer, which seems like a sign that the man is willing to take his time. But perhaps an even better indication of Youandewan’s patience is the gradual pace with which his productions themselves come together, a trait readily displayed throughout the four elongated offerings heard on the producer’s new EP for the Secretsundaze label.

Despite a short tracklist, the Times EP still manages to run for more than 30 minutes; the two a-side cuts take up over half of that time themselves. While many producers may use similar amounts of time to craft rather involved musical movements or to amass as many interlocked layers as they please, Youandewan seems to just enjoy the space he gives himself to highlight each of the tunes’ components. A spotlight is put on typically overlooked details—like the particular crunch of a clap, the slight swing of a hi-hat, or the decaying trail of a vocal delay—simply because they’re the most active elements and are executed to such precise ends. That said, the productions on Times are nonetheless captivating, and are more than capable of luring listeners onto the dancefloor.

As we pointed out in our review of his recent Dissaray EP, Youandewan tends to coyly beckon listeners to the floor with “subtle shifts and pristine craftsmanship,” rather than rely on larger-than-life sonics. The four tracks on Times keep with the same ideology; each one does little more than simmer over the carefully assembled drum patterns, bluesy chords, and rounded basslines with a reserved enthusiasm and an almost cautious approach to evolution. As such, it’s hard to distinguish a standout from the EP—though the second a-side cut, “Be Dark,” does offer the record’s most memorable melodic sequence. On the whole, Times inhabits virtually the same sonic space, incorporating a singular sound palette into a handful of slightly divergent arrangements. This slow-changing take on deep, R&B-flecked house may not make for the most outrightly “exciting” music, per se, but in an era that surely has more than its fair share of “exciting” music (often made merely for excitement’s sake), Youandewan’s sound can be particularly refreshing.

Shed Drops New 12″ as Head High

German producer Shed is a man of many guises—a fact which we highlighted in our The Many Faces of Shed feature from last year—and today he has shared news of a new 12″ credited to his retro-minded Head High monker. The three-track Burning EP follows Head High’s Rave 12″, whose title track grabbed the number-20 spot our Best Tracks of 2012 list back in December. The tracklist and artwork for the Burning EP, which appears to be out now, are included below; previews of the EP can be heard here.

Video Premiere: Abstraxion “Break of Lights”

From the forthcoming Dark Knight EP, London-by-way-of-Marseille producer Abstraxion has shared a new video for spiralling EP cut “Break of Lights.” Taking a somewhat Koyaanisqatsi-reminiscent approach, the video syncs a number of seemingly unrelated, but appropriately serene, images to Abstraxion’s six-plus minute production. The man’s Dark Knight EP will see a release soon via the MKG label featuring remixes from It’s a Fine Line and Tim Paris.

Boiler Room Montreal Debuts Tomorrow with Grown Folk, CFCF, and More

Montreal has been one of the most fertile hotbeds for creative electronic music in recent years, and so it was really only a matter of time before international-streaming party Boiler Room touched down for a—hopefully ongoing—showcase in the Canadian city. With sets from neo-R&B auteur D’eon, shapeshifting producer CFCF, and rising production duo Grown Folk looking particularly enticing, Boiler Room Montreal 001 will be streaming live tomorrow from 7 pm to 11 pm EST—though even the furthest depths of our imagination are having trouble figuring out exactly what a headlining Purity Ring DJ set will entail (let’s just hope Megan James doesn’t feel the need to take on any MC duties in the process). While the city certainly has the depth of talent to justify an ongoing series, it is still a bit unclear at this point if tomorrow’s four-hour broadcast will launch a regular Boiler Room Montreal showcase, but the “001” tagged on the end of the flyer does seem to signal such an endeavor is in the works. When the time is right, Boiler Room’s live broadcast from Montreal can be streamed here.

Download Jonwayne’s Ambient Podcast for Stones Throw

As part of Stones Throw‘s semi-regular podcast series, SoCal producer and rapper Jonwayne has put together an ambient mix ideal for accompanying daytime naps and now available to download for free. In his own words, Wayne explains his inspiration for the mix, “For a couple of years I have started to embrace daytime napping again. Back in the day it was just something we did, but I feel that if you have a schedule that allows it you shouldn’t feel out of touch with the act of passing out on a couch or going back to bed altogether. It leaves more time in the night for creation and contemplation, which I feel we all need.” The full podcast—which clocks in at 67-minutes long—can be downloaded via Stones Throw here.

Silent Servant, Regis, and James Ruskin Announce New Label Project

Two of the three minds behind the celebrated Sandwell District label and artist collective—Juan Mendez (a.k.a. Silent Servant, pictured above) and Karl O’Connor (a.k.a. Regis)—have joined forces with British producer James Ruskin to launch a new art and music label project, Jealous God. As Resident Advisor reports, the new effort will be overseen by Regis with Silent Servant taking the role of visual director and Ruskin serving as musical director. In a similar vein to Sandwell District operations, Jealous God plan to do more than simply dish out records, with each release including an art zine, and the first 100 copies of each record coming with an “artifact” of some sort. The label will issue its inaugural release later this month in the form of the Sicario de Dios 12″ from SS/S, a collaboration between Silent Servant and Svreca. Jealous God has shared plans for further releases to come down the line from Ruskin himself, O/V/R (the name for Ruskin’s and Regis’ collaborative works), In Aeternam Vale, as well as an EP from Silent Servant—a producer recently featured in our In the Studio series—working solo.

Ore “Rise (Manni Dee’s Bootleg Mix)”**

London techno producer Ore‘s dubby, slightly swung “Rise”—a tune released last month on the man’s State EP for Civil—has received the remix treatment courtesy of Manni Dee (pictured above). In the capable hands of the Brighton producer—who himself has recently received notice for a pair of collaborative, juke-driven 12″s alongside Deft—the heavy-handed original is stretched out to nine minutes with its pummeling back-room techno bookended by moments of chilly abstraction.

Pinch and Adrian Sherwood Prep Collaborative Single

After previously enlisting the talents of genre-bending dubstep producer Pinch (pictured above, right) to help with various projects in recent years, veteran dub producer Adrian Sherwood (pictured above, left) has teamed up with the UK stalwart to deliver the pair’s first collaborative two-track single. Operating together simply as Sherwood & Pinch, the pair will release its On-U Sound vs. Tectonic 12″—On-U Sound being Sherwood’s own label while Tectonic is, of course, Pinch’s outstanding imprint—on June 10, officially debuting the collaboration on wax and, according to the press release, serving as “an intriguing preview of more to come.” The forthcoming single’s artwork and tracklist are included below.
