NN “001”

While we’re used to featuring elusive and masked artists here at XLR8R, it’s not often that we come across one-off, undisclosed collaborations. NN, a mysterious duo that might very well hail from somewhere in Europe, is one such pairing, and has shared a track it made for the second compilation from the Polaron Collective, Selections #2. Simply called “001,” NN’s production is a shuffling and melodic tech-house number that features dreary, shapeshifting pads and a smoothly grooving bassline. If you’re feeling “001,” be sure to look out for the rest of the compilation when it drops on October 29.

Shelter Point Forever For Now EP

It seems as though Hotflush plucked Shelter Point from complete obscurity. The Nottingham duo, listed simply as Liam and Robin, had virtually nothing to its name before Hotflush posted “Braille” on SoundCloud following the announcement of the pair’s debut EP. One of the only Shelter Point tracks floating around the internet is a remix of R&B singer JMSN, but based on that song alone, it’s hard to see how the producers stood out amongst the throngs of artists dropping bass-heavy and screwed-down R&B reworks into the ether. However, that mystery quickly melts away when listening to the duo’s debut record, the four-track Forever For Now EP, which showcases how Liam and Robin set themselves apart from the crowd of artists exploring lush, pillowy low end and drip-dropping percussion.

Lead single “Braille” finds Shelter Point drawing from a familiar palette of sounds but ducking away from the zeitgeist by arranging them with an eye for minimalism and restraint. The whirring, layered synths, bare-bones, garage-influenced beat, and croonish singing are common components following the lead of artists like Mount Kimbie. However, the duo distinguishes itself from peers such as Disclosure and Bondax by scaling everything back to almost a whisper. “Braille” uses hackneyed sounds like swelling synths and tinkling percussion, but there’s a sense of muted control that favors spacious, airy, and quiet productions over zooming synths and pitched vocal samples.

In fairness, the pair does take a more overstated path on “Hold on Me,” but the track still feels notably subdued. The song is brimming with noise—there are dizzy synths, plink-plonking notes, and crisp drum hits—but the duo allows the yawning vocals and meaty, grinding bass to speak loudly rather than packing a ton of different elements into the tune. The only time the partners’ production feels too cramped is on “Sleep Easy,” which pits ungainly and heavily edited singing against a lurching beat, squalling vocal samples, rattling snares, and whirling synth notes. But even at its most bloated, Shelter Point’s songwriting is hypnotizing and the duo’s choice to experiment with attention-grabbing vocal performances is fresh and intriguing. For the most part, the singing is quiet and tender, and stands out against the duo’s stark instrumentals, particularly on “Forever For Now.” The influence of James Blake certainly looms large over the pair’s minimalistic soundscapes and crooning vocal performances, but Shelter Point nonethless manages to distinguish itself from the throngs of Blake devotees.

RekChampa “Collapsin”

Georgian producer RekChampa has sent over “Collapsin,” a sleepy, bass-heavy number with blurry synths and hypnotically sensual vocals. You may remember RekChampa from his appearance on the inaugural compilation released by Oakland-based label West In Dust label (which, we should say, was co-founded by XLR8R staff writer Glenn Jackson), though his latest EP was released independently. Head over to the beatmaker’s Bandcamp page if you’re looking to pick up the other four tunes on RekChampa’s Self-Serve EP.

B Flat “Coalescence (Walter Ego Remix)”

The head honcho of UK label Bad Taste, Walter Ego, has taken the imprint’s upcoming release from B Flat into his own hands, remixing one of its tracks to his liking. “Coalescence (Walter Ego Remix)” transforms the original production’s fluid, head-nodding momentum into a sputtering and jagged stomper with noises popping and blaring over a broken beat. Both versions will be included on San Francisco producer B Flat’s forthcoming The Night is Over EP, which is available exclusively via Juno now and will appear on Boomkat and iTunes next week. Before then, you can preview the record after the jump.

Take a First Look at Ableton Live 9

Although there has been no official announcement from Ableton about the eventual release of the next generation of its Live software (update: Ableton’s official word on the product has now arrived), a video showing off some features of Live 9—and a slightly updated look—has found its way to the web, indicating a new version of the program is well on its way. The “leaked” video shows off a new compressor modelled after a “classic British console,” as well as a host of enhancements to the existing compressor, gate, and EQ functions in Live. There is currently no word on when Live 9 will see an official release, and the company has not made a statement in regards to the video’s content, but considering the same footage initially appeared briefly on Ableton’s own YouTube channel, you can rest assured this a legitimate first look at Live 9.

Listen to Fatima Al Qadiri’s New EP for Fade to Mind

Announced less than a month ago, Desert Strike is the new five-track EP from Brooklyn artist Fatima Al Qadiri, which arrived today courtesy of LA bass outpost Fade to Mind. But before you decide whether or not to grab a copy of the glossy, conceptual record for yourself, you can stream it in full, after the jump.

Video: Groundislava “Suicide Mission (feat. Baths)”

Today, Los Angeles producer and recent XLR8R podcast contributor Jasper Patterson, (a.k.a. Groundislava) released the video for “Suicide Mission,” a collaborative cut with fellow SoCal artist Baths taken from this year’s Feel Me LP for Friends of Friends. Directed by Patterson’s brother, Barney Patterson, of the visual art collective I Versus Eye, the video chronicles an alien’s journey to Earth, where the intergalatic traveler visits a party in LA and watches the sunrise over the ocean before destroying the planet. The video also features singer Will Wiesenfeld dressed in Groundislava’s unique garb, a taste of what’s to come in the future as part of WEDIDIT‘s fashion line.

Kuhrye-oo “Give In (For the Fame) (DJ Sliink Remix)”

The New York-based UNO camp has prepped a remix EP with Kurhye-oo‘s “Give In (For the Fame)” as the centerpiece. The record features remixes by artists like Le1f, d’Eon, Ryan Hemsworth, and Kuhrye-oo himself, who contributed an unreleased alternative version of the song. Featured here, DJ Sliink‘s rework embeds the vocal chirps into pockets of space located somewhere between the clattering drum hits and arpeggiated melodies. Still, there’s something fluid and glossy about his version of “Give In (For the Fame),” like the astral synth pads that appear and disappear throughout the simultaneously airy and percussive production.
