Thefft “Stares”

From the seemingly neverending pool of talented producers claiming London as their home base, Thefft is a burgeoning bass-music aficionado who recently dropped a three-track EP for the consistently quality net label Cut. Here we have the Primer EP’s (artwork above) closing track, “Stares,” a sharp, methodical voyage into the more dancefloor-friendly regions of dub-techno. Following a solid minute and a half of letting his drum programming take the lead amongst a cloud of noise, Thefft eventually introduces layers of fuzzy, ever-evolving chords which weave in and out as the unquestionably deep bass moves things along in a slightly laid-back fashion underneath it all. After giving “Stares” a listen below, you can download the whole EP for the price of “Pay What You Want” (and your email) over at the Cut imprint’s Bandcamp.

Cooly G “Landscapes” b/w “It’s Serious”

UK producer Cooly G (a.k.a. Merissa Campbell) is an interesting figure. At this point, she’s almost inextricably tied to UK funky, even though her sound has always been weirder and more sultry than that of her big-tune-chasing counterparts. When her Dub Organizer EPs began to surface in 2008 and 2009, the low-slung house rhythms and sultry vibes easily made Cooly G one of the most exciting new artists in the UK scene. (After all, we did put her on the cover of XLR8R and made her a centerpiece of our first big UK funky feature.) Yet as the last two years have gone by, the flow of new Cooly G tunes has slowed significantly, leaving many to wonder if the producer still has the proverbial “it.” With the release of new single “Landscapes” b/w “It’s Serious,” it appears that the answer, at least for now, is a pretty solid yes.

Interestingly enough, the single is Cooly G’s first collaborative release, and she’s enlisted a couple of heavy hitters to assist with the production. On the a-side, fellow London-based producer Simbad guests, yet the sexy, slow-burning tune is more or less classic Cooly G, perhaps with a little extra polish. The drums shuffle and snap, but the song revolves around its smoothly spacey synths and Campbell’s soulfully cooed vocals. It’s the kind of track that’s as suitable for soundtracking a makeout session on the couch as it is serving as a potent piece of a refined late-night DJ set.

Things get a tad rougher on the flip side, as Baltimore house maestro Karzima steps in to lay down some of his signature percussive architecture on “It’s Serious.” The drums are layered and complex, but retain a straightforward groove and mesh nicely with the song’s simple bassline and warbling synth bits. Apart from a few ghostly whispers, Cooly’s vocal chords sit this one out, but the track’s spotless drum work keeps things more than compelling, as the song’s runtime of less than four minutes almost seems too short.

MK and Scottie Deep Form New Label, Say Ahh!

Amidst a revival of the sounds Marc and Scott Kinchen (better known as MK and Scottie Deep) helped cement as part of the ’90s NY house and garage scene, the brotherly duo has decided to form a new imprint by the name of Say Ahh!. In a recent chat with Resident Advisor, Scott Kinchen laid out the plans for the label, which already has releases scheduled from Si’ke DJs, Angus Jefford, Plastic Co., Oli Furness, Jamie Trench, 4th Measure Men, and, of course, the label heads themselves. According to Scott, Say Ahh! will be focused on “purely house and deep house,” and added that “every release will be available on vinyl with at least two vinyl exclusive mixes, [and] with super limited edition colored vinyl on certain releases as well.” The imprint’s first release comes in the form of a four-track record, Safe House, from UK duo the Si’Ke DJs, which is slated to hit the streets December 6. Submerse “Your All Mine”

When we tagged young UK producer Submerse as a Bubblin’ artist earlier this year, we mentioned his move toward harder, bass-driven sounds—and although this unreleased track, “Your All Mine,” isn’t a raucous banger, it certainly drives. The tune finds Submerse masterfully taking soft string-synth pads, gentle trumpet sounds, lilting piano melodies, and sultry contemporary R&B vocals and laying them over seemingly incongruous hard-edged drum patterns, a heavy kick, and a solid bassline to create a piece of catchy, almost romantic 2-step.

Download the Instrumentals of Joker’s New Album

This week saw the long-awaited release of The Vision, the long-awaited debut album from UK producer—and former XLR8Rcover boy—Joker. Then today, just a few days removed from the LP’s official release, Joker decided to make instrumental versions of all the album cuts available for free download. To get the tunes, he only asks that people “like” his Facebook fan page. The download link can be found on his Facebook wall, but interested parties should act fast, as the links keep changing due to the frenzy of people trying to download the tracks.

Outkast “Unhappy (Deebs’ Dreary Dayz Rework)”

Even with a close listen to Cedaa‘s recent XLR8R podcast, you still may not have picked up that you were hearing the vocal stylings of Outkast’s Big Boi towards the end of the mix. The rework of “Unhappy”—whose initial release on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was largely overshadowed by mega-hits like “Hey Yeah” and “The Way You Move”—comes courtesy of Canadian remix guru Deebs (pictured above), who edits the mainstream rap track into a piece of dreamy, boundary-pushing hip-hop.

Video: Pictureplane “Black Nails”

Somehow, Pictureplane is slowly becoming the Anthony Bourdain of the art-weirdo underground. His last video for “Negative Slave” featured footage of the globetrotting Denver artist atop an ancient Mexican pyramid, while this latest clip was largely shot during a recent tour in Russia. In Pictureplane’s own words, “The majority of the video was all shot at a chemical and plastic factory in a heavy industrial [area] on the outskirts of Kazan. Everything is orange because of enormous smokestacks shooting out massive fireballs that would illuminate the entire forest, and the air smelled of poison. It was really quite a scary and apocalyptic place and I have never seen anything quite like it.”

George FitzGerald to Release New EP via Hotflush

London-based producer and ManMakeMusic head honcho George FitzGerald is set to release another EP this year on Scuba‘s Hotflush imprint. The three-song EP, Shackled, sees FitzGerald continuing to combine the emotive aspects of UK garage and soulful house with dubstep and techno. The release comes out on December 5, but the title track was already featured on Scuba’s recent DJ Kicks mix. Check out the artwork and tracklist after the jump.

Slackk “Girl Song”

On “Girl Song,” one of five tracks from UK producer Slackk‘s forthcoming She’s A Vector EP, the grime-loving beatmaker cross-pollinates the track with garage and Chicago-house influences and a Motown-indebted vocal sample. The EP, which comes out November 14 via the Tokyo-based Diskotopia imprint, sees Slackk (a.k.a. Paul Lynch) fusing his influences together to create another chapter of edgy “eski-house” rhythms. Check out the EP artwork and full tracklisting after the jump.

With two records coming out next week on Darkestral, Boddika (a.k.a. Al Bleek a.k.a. Alex Green) will also be unveiling two new monikers to match the pair of releases. Although he’s already one half of Instra:mental, Boddika will be teaming up with Darkestral label boss Drkstr to form another twosome, Transportation AAD, which has tracks on both of the upcoming records. Boddika’s other new handle is Grey Goo, under which he’ll be spilling out dark and cinematic tracks on the second release. Preview both 12″s after the jump. (via FACT)
