Soma Records Celebrates 20 Years by Releasing Unreleased Daft Punk Demo

Particularly in the faddish realm of electronic dance music, 20 years is a long time for a label to maintain relevancy. Against the odds stands Glasgow’s Soma Records, which has managed to maintain a consistently steady course with a number of heavy-hitting and era-defining releases under its belt. Celebrating its run—and with no intention of slowing down—the label is releasing Soma Records 20 Years, a three-CD compilation. Containing an impressive amount of material from the label’s catalog—two DJ mixes and an unmixed retrospective—the release also marks the first time that Daft Punk’s (pictured above) “Driving” will see official release. Found on a DAT tape deep in the archive, “Driving” was originally submitted to the label with “Rollin’ and Scratchin” to be released as Soma25, but was shelved to make room for crowd favorite “Da Funk.” Soma Records 20 Years drops September 19, but in the meantime you can check out the tracklist and album art below.

Tycho “Hours”

San Francisco’s Scott Hansen is a man of many talents. Although he’s arguably best known for the stunning design work he does under the name ISO50, he also produces stunning, slow-motion dance music as Tycho. According to Pitchfork, Hansen will be releasing a new Tycho album, Dive, on November 15. “Hours” is taken from the forthcoming full-length, and sounds like the aural equivalent of a sunset at the beach. Let’s just say the above photo is incredibly appropriate for the overall vibe of the music. The song is just plain pretty, yet smartly avoids twee territory with its thick bassline and organic drum sounds. More like this one please. The artwork and complete tracklist for Dive is available after the jump.

1. A Walk
2. Hours
3. Daydream
4. Dive
5. Coastal Brake
6. Ascension
7. Melanine
8. Adrift
9. Epigram
10. Elegy

Deftones Frontman Launches Witch-House Project, Genre Officially Over

Granted, the entire notion of “witch house” was pretty fucking lame from the get-go, but the news that Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has launched a new project called ††† (pronounced “Crosses”) is pretty much the genre’s death knell, right? The three-piece group, which claims Los Angeles as its hometown—what happened to Sacramento?—has also released a free, five-song EP, entitled—you guessed it—. Witch-house diehards and the morbidly curious can head here to download the release. We’ve gone ahead and posted the complete tracklist below, and it’s loaded with † symbols too. Yikes. (via Altered Zones)

01 †his Is A †rick

Update: ††† member Shaun Lopez replied to our story on Twitter with this classy graphic. Sick burn dude.

Salva “That Girl (Pharrell feat. Snoop Dogg Cover)”

LA beat hub Friends of Friends has unveiled another installment of its Pop Massacre compilation series, in which beat- and bass-oriented producers rework a pop song of their choice. The 15-track second volume includes efforts from a range of artists, including Shlohmo, LOL Boys, Jonwayne, Mexicans with Guns, Chico Mann, Devonwho, and others, and finds the likes of everyone from The Beatles to Rihanna to Waka Flocka Flame getting the remix treatment. The compilation, available for free download here, features plenty of gems, but this track from LA-based producer (and former Bubblin’ subject) Salva is a definite highlight. Tackling the 2006 Pharrell and Snoop Dogg collaboration “That Girl,” Salva transforms the laid-back summertime hip-hop of the original into a hyperactive juke tune full of sped-up lyrical snippets and intense synth stabs.

DFA Releases Joe Goddard and Gavin Russom 12s Today; Stream ‘Gabriel’

New York’s DFA Records is nothing if not diverse, and today it continued to speak to that general sentiment with the release of two 12″s, from Gavin Russom and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard. As is often the case with Russom’s records, the DFA studio engineer and resident gear geek offers up more analog-synth madness with the “Night Sky” single, which also contains an “Adjustment” from Mutant Dance Beat (a.k.a. the collab between Beau Wanzer and Melvin Oliphant III, the latter of whom is usually known as Traxx). Goddard’s EP, Gabriel, on the other hand, sees the Hot Chip vocalist go the house route, to nice effect. Both records are out today, but you can stream the whole of Gabriel below, as well as check out artwork and tracklists for both.

Lucky Paul “Demon Spawn (Lucky Paul Refix)”

Earlier this year, New Zealander Lucky Paul released The Slow Ground EP via the eclectic Somethinksounds imprint. At the time, the now-Berlin-based artist didn’t have a huge profile, but the release of the EP and a subsequent remix single on New York’s Wolf + Lamb label have quickly changed things. Somethinksounds is getting set to repress the EP, so they’ve relinquished this new version of “Demon Spawn” to help spread the word. While the original track was a lurching, off-kilter slice of futuristic boogie-funk, here Lucky Paul has refashioned the song into something more suitable for the four-on-the-floor set. The soulful vocals have been kept largely intact, but they now lay alongside some silky filtered synths and ride smoothly over a steady techno pulse. It’s unclear whether Lucky Paul always had these kinds of dancefloor inclinations at his disposal or whether he was inspired after hearing his music transformed by the Wolf + Lamb crew, but we’d like to go ahead and put in a vote for him to keep experimenting with these kinds of club-friendly rhythms.

Listen to a New Mix From Kid606

Berlin-based beat pulverizer Kid606 (pictured above left) just tipped us to a new mix he’s posted on his SoundCloud, entitled This Kid606 Life #2: Positive Affirmations For Studio Nerds To Play On The Way To The Club. Along with the nearly 30-song tracklist, the producer (known to many as Miguel De Pedro) offered these words:

It’s 11 p.m. on a Friday, and you’re trying to decide what to put on your iPod to listen to en route to the club. You’re all deflated from too many hours spent in front of the computer, maybe programming, if you’re gainfully employed, but most likely stalking people on Facebook or installing new software you really don’t need. And now that you need to go crazy and let the beast out, you need the perfect soundtrack to get yourself PUMPED UP!

Well, have we got just the right thing for you: The perfect blend between brainy, complex, IDM-tinged electronica, (Eskmo, HecQ, Phoenecia, Siriusmo, FSOL, Cex), and hot, sweaty, unpretentious, fun dance music (DJ Funk, ARK, Bassment Jaxx, R. Kelly, Proxy, Waka Flocka Flame, Ludacris), and everything in between (Adult., Bok Bok, Machinedrum, Rustie).

So put away those Tony Robbins cassettes your aunt gave you, and pump this mix instead!

‘Nuff said! Hear the mix and peep the tracklist below.

Podcast 209: Mike Huckaby

The history of Detroit music is littered with artists who have been called legendary, but there is really no denying the crucial role Mike Huckaby has played in the Motor City’s dance scene. Over the past two decades, the man has been in the thick of it as a DJ, producer, record store clerk (at the now-defunct Record Time), and instructor (as part the city’s Youthville program). He’s influenced and touched the lives of countless Detroit artists, but has also turned out some classics in his own right, and continues to carry the torch for his hometown. Although he’s never been especially prolific as a producer, recent years have seen increased output from Huckaby, particularly in the remix department. Huckaby’s known for his love of classic house sounds, and this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast finds him going deep and masterfully weaving together a choice selection of multifaceted, soulful tracks. It’s clean, it’s tasteful, and it’s a welcome reminder of what Detroit is all about. Lucky for us, Huckaby will be playing alongside Steffi, Beautiful Swimmers, and others this Friday, August 5, right in our backyard at Public Works in San Francisco. If this mix is any indication, everyone within shouting distance would be wise to attend.

Zeadron “When I Fall”

Southern California’s Rebel imprint—which also doubles as a pretty decent blog—continues to turn out thoughtful, bass-oriented releases, all of which are available for free download. The latest comes right from Rebel’s own backyard, courtesy of Orange County beatmaker Zeadron (a.k.a. Jack Heffron). His When I Fall EP dropped yesterday, and the morose title track quickly caught our ears with its loosely assembled piano samples, ghostly vocal pieces, and scattershot percussion. Things do perk up significantly when some thick synth melodies are introduced about halfway through the proceedings, but the song’s overall vibe lies somewhere between “glorious chillout” and “wistful melancholy.” Give it a listen below, and then head here to grab the entire three-song EP, which includes remixes of “When I Fall” from Hungary’s Headshotboyz and Chicago-based producer Savile.
