Peach Melba Can’t Let Go

There’s something about John “Juan” MacLean that suggests he’s a man that feels he has a lot to prove. From 2010’s one-take all-vinyl DJ-Kicks to 2008’s piano-house smash “Happy House,” his output (not to mention his interviews) over the past three years has been focused almost exclusively on building an impenetrable aura of authenticity. It’s not hard to guess why either: MacLean came to DJ culture late in life after maintaining a decidedly anti-DJ stance. With his new Peach Melba project (in collaboration with vocalist Amy Douglas), MacLean has created yet another channel for beefing up his dance music authority.

MacLean’s desire to demonstrate the breadth of his knowledge is evidenced by Peach Melba’s first single, “Can’t Let Go,” which features three rather disparate takes on the same song: a deep, Chez Damier-style ’90s Detroit house cut, weirdo tech-house, and a kind of dub-techno cut that could be easily mistaken for a Moritz Von Oswald M-Series track. For a single that covers such broad ground, you’d imagine that it would lose a sense of cohesiveness—but you’d be wrong. MacLean’s new-found ability to program (at times) ludicrously swung-out drum patterns and Douglas’ Lola Blank-meets-Paris Grey vocals glue the entire project together.

Unsurprisingly, Peach Melba is at its best when working from the blueprints of the past. The straightforward “Can’t Let Go” and the hazy “Can’t Let Go (Dub of Dub)” both bring to mind a nostalgia for the creativity, vibe, and diversity of the ’90s dance music scene. “Can’t Let Go (Dub),” however, takes a monotonous tech-house tack that doesn’t fare as well. That being said, it’s not a big stumbling block—as a whole, the single is a worthy addition to MacLean’s catalog, and will undoubtedly become a building block of DJ sets for years to come.

Check Out Krystal Klear’s FACT Mix

Manchester-based DJ/producer Krystal Klear may not exactly be a regular on XLR8R, but there’s no denying we’re fans of his classically minded house and boogie productions. So, it should go without saying that we’re pleased to see him take the reins on the latest installment of FACT‘s mix series. FACT Mix 267: Krystal Klear is a lengthy set full of dancefloor standards and contemporary sounds, which includes cuts from the likes of Tiger & Woods, Tensnake, MK, Giorgio Moroder, Daft Punk, the mixmaster himself, and others. Danny Benedetinni “Chillers”

The Items and Things imprint (collectively run by techno stalwarts Magda, Troy Pierce, and Marc Houle) is set to release a new EP of “disco-tech, techno, and nu-disco with an almost industrial underpinning” today from DJ/producer Danny Benedettini. “Chillers” is one of the least disco-tinged tracks Tell Me Quietly (artwork above) has to offer, finding the newly Berlin-based producer folding a decent amount of deep, minimal tech-house stylings into the seven-plus-minute excursion. Throughout, the tune’s steady, pulsating rhythm is accentuated by a handful of clever surprises including some delightful tom rolls and a host of lazer-sounding synths that pop and sizzle around every other corner.

Download Nine Free Tracks From S-X

Butterz label cohort and man behind the excellent “Woo Riddim” tune S-X has reached 5,000 followers on his Twitter account, and just like when he reached 3,000 followers, he’s giving away free music to mark the occasion. You can download the aptly titled 5,000 Followers EP, which features nine cuts from the grime producer, here. Now, we can only wonder what S-X will do when he reaches 10,000 followers…

xxxy “Open Your Eyes” b/w “You Gotta Do You”

Manchester up-and-comer xxxy takes a quick left turn for the second single to his name this year, and his first contribution to the quickly rising Orca imprint. Still very much entrenched in the UK garage/post-dubstep sound, xxxy’s “Open Your Eyes” b/w “You Gotta Do You” mines retro-futuristic sounds for this pair of energetic tunes, but they lack a bit of the allure of his previous works.

From the onset, “Open Your Eyes” seems prepared to take us on another journey through familiar future-bass territory—but intros can be deceiving, as the track quickly turns into a bombastic take on classic garage. Characterized by aggressive kick drums, relentless percussion, and the sort of chopped drum breaks one couldn’t escape from in the UK’s not-so-distant past, the a-side brings to mind a few of the smoother passages found on ?-Ziq‘s Lunatic Harness while still being solidly rooted in the current UK bass sphere. The flipside, “You Gotta Do You,” has a much more distinctly electro feel to it, matching a blistering drum-machine breakbeat with ominous, buzzing pads and just a touch of acid synths. The whole affair sounds like the evil twin to a classic Afrika Bambaataa beat—sped up, slightly distorted, and sinisterly danceable.

While xxxy’s discography to date is undoubtedly impressive, it is still relatively limited, and although “Open Your Eyes” b/w “You Gotta Do You” is a welcome and well-executed stretch of his production scope, it doesn’t quite satisfy the craving many of us have for more of the forward-thinking bass the burgeoning producer has proven himself capable of crafting.

Check Out a Podcast by Bulgarian Producer KiNK

While we’re usually not too keen on directing people to sites that require registration, in the case of KiNK‘s latest podcast for Data Transmission, we’ll make an exception. The Bulgarian leftfield techno producer and recent XLR8R-featured artist has dropped a fantastically eclectic mix that stands as a reminder as to why many up-and-coming producers name check KiNK as a direct influence. Featuring a diverse roster of artists that stretches from the loose and organic sound of British nu-disco band The Main Stem to the Music Box vibe of Jamie 3:26, and into the dark and techy world of Levon Vincent and Deetron, it’s putting it mildly to say that the KiNK podcast covers a lot of territory. You can check out the full thing over at Data Transmission, but the impatient can check out the tracklist below.

Creative Swing Alliance – Don`t Forget Your Keyz
Yello – Bostich (Jamie 326 remake)
The Main Stem – Contortion Danse (The Rhythm Oddyssey Warehouse Dub)

Levon Vincent – Man Or Mistress
Disco Nihilist – Greasy Grind
ARTTU – Rise Up

Leif – Invisible (KiNK live dub)

DJ Wilson “Doutro Mundo”

Earlier in the month, the Swiss imprint Mental Groove released a compilation that focused on underground and unreleased kuduro tracks from an international list of artists, entitled Bazzerk: African Digital Dance (artwork above). Compiled by French DJs/producers Jess & Crabbe, the comp has a monster of a tracklist, with 27 total contributions from the likes of DJ Ketchup, Diamond Bass, Pacheko, and more. “Doutro Mundo” marks DJ Wilson‘s only solo contribution to the release, and finds the Portuguese producer crafting a slice of kuduro that places the style seamlessly into a future-bass context with precise percussion and an array of lazery synths.

Space: not exactly the final frontier, but definitely something like it. Much like the island, the 20-year fixture of Ibiza nightlife has changed a lot over the years, but not entirely for the worse. Maintaining a progressive (but generally not progressive house) booking policy, Space’s now famous Sunday We Love Space party boasts a roster of artists that runs the spectrum, from Ibiza favorites like Derrick May and Jeff Mills to nu-school oddballs like Blondes and Tensnake. Sitting somewhere in the middle of that spectrum are Miss Kittin, Ivan Smagghe, and Dan Ghenacia, who just shared the bill two weeks ago. Commemorating that event, We Love Space got the closely knit trio together for their “We Love…” video series, which features choice interviews, candid statements, a cameo by Jean-Paul Belmondo, and an overall discussion of the French community’s impact on Balearic nightlife.
