XLR8R’s Shaun Bloodworth Featured in Rinse FM Visual Retrospective

As a general rule, when thinking about radio stations, one doesn’t immediate think about graphic identity. Bucking that notion is London-based once-pirate-now-legitimate radio station/label Rinse FM, which has, with the help of XLR8R photographer Shaun Bloodworth and London design firm Give Up Art, managed to create a distinct visual identity for itself across diverse media. Celebrating that rich visual heritage, the people at Rinse have put together Rinse Presents: A Visual Retrospective – The Work of Shaun Bloodworth & Give Up Art, a showcases that features works that span the entire 17-year period since the station’s inception. You can catch the exhibition at London’s Truman Brewery, but you’ll have to be quick as the exhibit will only last for 10 days between August 12 and 21. Check below for some teaser shots from the exhibit.

Coppertone “Clandestiny”

Floating on a bed of warm, buzzing tones this track comes from Coppertone‘s forthcoming 7″, Kill and Release, for the NNA Tapes imprint. Built on a steady beat and delicate synth-pop core, “Clandestiny” is a simple, intimate song hidden behind piles of slow-moving sonics and harmless noise. The calm, angelic vocal delivery of Coppertone mastermind Sasha Wiseman is perhaps the most clandestine aspect of the tune, with its lyrics blurred into the murky swirl so that one has to really concentrate to gather even a glimpse of the words. Four other offerings of similarly serene and, we’re told, at times even intimidating soundscapes can be found on Kill and Release (artwork above) when it sees its release on August 29.

Azari & III to Release New Single

Before the August 30 release date of Azari & III‘s self-titled debut LP, the Canadian house revivalists will drop a single for that record’s closing track, “Manic.” Along with the original tune, the 12″ will hold remixes from Maceo Plex, DJ Sneak, Borderline, and Finger Prince, and will be released on August 2 via Tiga’s Turbo label. Before then, you can stream “Manic” below.

Mathieu Santos “Silly Thoughts (Balam Acab Remix)”

On this calming rework of “Silly Thoughts” by Mathieu Santos (pictured above), Pittsburgh-based solo producer Alec Koone (a.k.a. Balam Acab) takes apart the sparse elements that make up the indie-pop tune, treating the sounds like he would the source material for any of his gorgeous original productions. Santos’ voice is pitched every which way, the percussive sounds are chopped up into slow-grooving rhythms, the melodies become dreamy lullabies, and it’s all soaked in a wash of delay and reverb. It’s a quick little tune that will just have to help tide us over until Balam Acab’s debut LP drops on September 6 via Tri Angle. (via Stereogum)

Lokiboi “Summer Groove”

Claiming Moscow as his hometown and London as his current residence, Lokiboi‘s sounds are a little hard to place. For the first minute of “Summer Groove,” it appears the young producer is preparing to take us into the kind of dark territory that would directly contradict the vibes evoked by the tune’s title—then things begin to take a turn. Bringing in filtered piano samples, funky bass, and crisp percussion, Lokiboi’s track completely moves away from the cold underground to the sun-drenched warmth of summertime house. By the time “Summer Groove” breaks down again, before pushing on to its final movement, we’re pretty much hooked, left only to fall even deeper into Lokiboi’s groove courtesy of the irresistible melodic glide that follows.

Ramp’s Fourth Wave Imprint to Drop Second 12″

Only a few months after Rampannounced the arrival of its new imprint, Fourth Wave, with the release of a 12″ by Presk, the fresh label prepares to drop its second record. The 12″ will feature two tracks from 18-year-old UK house producer Gerry Read, and will be available on August 15. Before then you can check out portions of “Untitled” and “Legs” below.

Alpines “Cocoon (xxxy Remix)”

DJ/producer xxxy has been insanely busy lately. He’s collaborated with Bristol bass head Baobinga, dropped a two-track 12″ on the growing Orca label, busted out DJ sets all over the place, and kept up with his remix work all the while. The latest of his solid reworks to make the rounds is this buoyant soundsystem jam, “Cocoon (xxxy Remix).” Originally by UK pop duo Alpines (pictured above), “Cocoon” starts out sporting a beat and melody that wouldn’t be entirely out of place in xxxy’s own work, which the producer seems to confirm as he bases much of his shimmering version around those moving sounds.

With the release date for Cubic Zirconia‘s debut LP, Follow Your Heart, drawing nearer, Fool’s Gold, along with the good folks at Scion A/V, are beginning to drop some hints as to what’s in store, and have unleashed a video for the forthcoming album’s “Take Me High” track. The video features loads of clever choreography, some rather glamorous lighting, piano-driven disco-house vibes, and the sultry vocals of Zirconia front woman Tiombe Lockhart—all topped with an absurd amount of “jazz hands”-style moves. But hey, it sure looks like they had a lot of fun with this one, right?
